ANOTHER GREAT WEEKEND

girl-gang

I think on average there is 1 race every season now that is converted to a duathlon, and that one has been cashed in for 2021 with round #2 of the 2XU Series at Sandringham becoming a run-ride-run.  Some could say athletes dodged a bullet by not having to run up ‘that hill’.  Although anyone who has raced a duathlon knows that it’s fast and furious.  Athletes go out on that first run at about double the speed of their last run!

We had over 45 athletes race under the Tri-Alliance banner, all adapting to the new format really well.  Special shout out to Johnny, Chloe and Team Feugo, who all finished on the 3rd step of the podium in the Sprint race.  To Dan and TA1 who finished in 2nd place in the Olympic distance.  And to Steph for her 1st place in the Fun Tri.  We also have a feeling Aleks finished right up at the pointy end in the kids race!  There were 16 top 10 spots overall, but many more athletes happy to have pushed boundaries and achieve new PBs across the board.  And what about Ray and Matty....practically in separable for the entire race....the entire race!  Including their finish times!!! Well done to the whole Team.  We are thrilled with all the post-race excitement and the genuine happiness to just be back out racing.  No pressure, no expectation…just racing for the love of it!

The General has put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) this week, to bring us his race report from the weekend.  It is a very funny ready and perhaps aptly titled, ‘Dealing with race day disappointment’.

Ollie is calling on athletes to continue supporting the collaboration with Melbourne University.  He’s excited to let you know that there are currently 2 teams developing 2 prediction models, an injury prevention model and a performance prediction model.  He is looking for real-time Garmin data to help the interns improve both of these.  Read on below for how you can help and the incentive for your contribution.

In regard to training updates, no doubt you would have seen our email this week about MSAC swim sessions.  We consider ourselves lucky to still have premier pool lane space, but please note the new times.  For all the details check your inbox from Monday.

For those of you who’ve heard all the good things about the ride sessions with coaches Gaz & Steph on a Thursday morning and now have FOMO…. fear not.  We have included the details again this week so you can get in touch to see if it is for you!

And finally, we are thrilled to be having Luke Bell join us at Elwood tomorrow night, in his new role at ONs.  Luke will be bringing along the ON wear test kit, so if you’ve been wanting to try out the ‘running on clouds’ feeling or there’s a model you’ve been wondering about, make sure you get down a bit earlier to get a pair sorted out before the session.

Dealing With Race Day Disappointment

When I was asked to be part of a team as the swim leg team member, I thought that would be ok, particularly as I would be joining the former Victorian Crit Champion and a sub-3-hour Marathon runner as part of the team.
Let me put that into some context for you...

Contribute Data for Prediction Models

We have some exciting news!  Last year we had 2 teams from the Melbourne University Data Science department build two separate prediction models:

  1. Injury prevention model that shows (in real time) if you are overtraining and, on the way, to developing an injury.
  2. Performance prediction model, that shows fitness, performance and also prediction of future performance based on your prescribed programs.

What we need to help improve these models is more data.  With this, we are lucky to have a team of 6 interns working on consolidating a number of projects we have been working on over the past 2 years.  But to improve these further, we are looking for your real time data from your Garmin Connect.

The incentive is that you will shortly be able to have access to your data on these models on our testing server to see your improvements and train smarter.

If you are interested, it is a very simple process.

TRAINING UPDATES

Monday Squad Swimming
New MSAC Swim Timetable

You would have all received an email from us yesterday, outling the new swim squad timetable for February.  Please take a look at this for more detailed information.

But what you need to know is:

  • Mondays @ 7pm – 8:15pm (outdoor 4 x 50m lanes)
  • Wednesdays @ 7pm – 8:15pm (indoor 4 x 50m lanes)
  • Fridays @ 6am – 7:15am (indoor 3 x 50m lanes)

Remember that Monday and Wednesday sessions are open to all athletes, and Friday mornings are for Intermediate/Advanced athletes only.  If you are unsure if you should attend, speak to Ollie or Weekesy beforehand for advice.

Wear Testing @ Elwood This Week

We're excited to announce that ON's new Marketing Specialist, Luke Bell, will be joining us at Elwood this Thursday night.  And he'll be bringing the full ON wear test kit, so you can try out what it feels like to run on clouds!

We'll start all short course athletes off with a run, so arrive a bit earlier to get a pair of ON's organised.  And long course athletes will have plenty of time to catch up with Luke following their swim.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITY

Hot Laps
Wanna Try Some Hotties?

Do you lack confidence on the bike? Do you dread going for a ride? Or just wish you had like-minded company to ride with? Join former Victorian Crit Champion, Coach Gaz, and regular crit racing FUPF (first unplaced female), Coach Steph, for some Thursday morning laps of Albert Park Lake.

Now, we can hear you thinking “I can’t do hot laps” or “I’m not fast enough” or “I’ll mess things up” …but, that’s actually the whole point!

Gaz and Steph will introduce and reinforce skills for riding safely and skilfully in a group, will share all their tips & tricks for using these skills and demonstrate how these skills are more important than strength! But, at the same time, we’ll all get stronger & more confident together working towards the goal of riding our own hot laps. This is an opportunity like no other with the wisdom and experience that these two coaches bring.

And of course, every session will be followed by coffee and if you’re really lucky, the opportunity to chat and pick the coaches’ brains.

We are seeking expressions of interest from athletes interested in participating in this session, and some athletes may be tapped on the shoulder – you know who you are! Please email Steph with ANY and ALL questions and concerns you have about this session, we don’t want anyone to feel scared or nervous and for everyone to feel welcome!
