Recovery Week is Here!

After two solid weeks of hitting speed goals and pushing your limits, it’s time to give those legs (and lungs!) a little TLC. That’s right - it’s Recovery Week, folks! Our 3-week periodisation cycle is designed to help you build, adapt, and recover so you come back even stronger. It’s tempting to keep grinding, but trust me, taking this recovery time seriously is what’s going to make those gains last. Think of it as hitting the “reset” button for your muscles.

Speaking of hitting buttons, Ollie’s thrown down a little challenge to make sure you stay engaged this week.  Yep, it’s Ollie’s Recovery Week Challenge! No spoilers here, but if you’re the competitive type (and let’s be honest, most of you are), this is your chance to show that even during recovery, you can outdo yourself. Details are below, so get ready to crush it, recovery-style.

Next up, a heads-up: this week’s run session is no ordinary jog at The Tan. We’re stepping it up with a run time trial! This is your opportunity to test the waters (or the pavement) and see how far you’ve come. Whether you're chasing a PB or just want to see where you stand, this is the perfect checkpoint in your training. Full details below - so lace up those shoes and come ready to race the clock!

And speaking of chasing goals, we’ve got some awesome athlete results to celebrate! You'll have to keep reading to find out who has been representing the squad across different parts of the world. We’re always proud to acknowledge your achievements.

In the spirit of recovery, we’ve also reconnected with our friends at Lakeside Sports Medicine. Ollie sat down with their team this week to put some plans in place as we head into race season. You’ll find bios on the two physios who will be prioritising our squad members (because let’s face it, you’re going to need them). If you're having any trouble booking an appointment, no worries—Ollie’s got a secret Bat-phone directly to them. He’ll get you sorted!

Also, this week’s edition brings back an old favourite: Meet the TA Family! This time, we’re getting to know Claire, one of our newer squad members. We won’t spoil the surprise here, but trust us, you’ll want to read more about what makes Claire such a great addition to the crew. We’re stoked to have her.

Now, a special shout-out to all of our members gearing up for the Melbourne Marathon Festival next weekend! Whether you’re running the 10km, the half, or going the full 42.2km, we’re cheering you every step of the way. All those long runs, tempo sessions, and speed intervals are about to pay off. Good luck, go hard, and remember to enjoy every minute of it - you’ve earned it!

Lastly, just a quick reminder: all sessions are updated on the online timetable. And of particular note, Saturday morning is the start of our Combo Sessions for the season. Make sure you bring everything - swim gear, bike, run shoes. Ollie will tailor the session based on weather conditions, so be ready for anything!

That’s it for this week! Focus on recovery, give your body the rest it needs, and come back ready to hit the next cycle harder than ever. And hey, maybe squeeze in some light Netflix recovery while you're at it - doctor’s orders! (Can highly recommend SPRINT)

Ollie's Recovery Challenge

It’s recovery week, which means it’s time to dial things back and let your body and mind recharge. We all know how hard you’ve been training, but this phase is just as important for your overall progress. Recovery is where the real gains happen, giving your muscles a chance to repair and grow stronger.

Two things that are often overlooked but are key to maximising recovery: sleep and self-treatment.

Why Sleep Matters
During deep sleep, your body produces growth hormone, which plays a vital role in muscle repair and recovery. Skimping on sleep can slow down this process, leaving you feeling tired and less ready to hit the next training block at full speed. Prioritising sleep, especially during recovery week, is non-negotiable.

The Power of Self-Treatment
Foam rolling, extended stretching, and self-massage aren’t just feel-good options, they’re essential. They help reduce muscle tightness, improve flexibility, and speed up your recovery. Investing a little time into self-treatment now will pay off when you’re ready to get back to full training intensity.

Ollie’s Recovery Challenge:

This week, I challenge you to:

  1. Get at least 4 nights of 8 hours of sleep. Prioritise your rest like you would a key training session. Your muscles will thank you!

  2. Self-treat at least 4 times this week. Whether it’s quality time with your foam roller, extended stretching, or self-massage, give your body the TLC it needs to recover properly.

Take on the challenge and see how you feel at the end of the week. Remember, recovery done right leads to stronger, faster training sessions down the track!

Final Time Trial for 2024!

Don’t Miss Out!

The end of the winter training timetable is in sight, and this Thursday, 10th October at 6pm, we’ll be holding our final run time trial of the year at Albert Park Lake. Whether you’ve been smashing your goals all year or are looking for one last chance to measure your progress, now is the time to give it your all!

Time trials are more than just about the numbers—they’re a key part of your training journey. This final one gives you the opportunity to see how far you’ve come, not just in terms of speed but also in terms of endurance, recovery, and mental strength. Every km you run adds to your fitness and confidence as race season draws near. This is your last chance in 2024 to set a benchmark and head into the next phase feeling strong!

We’ll be running rain, hail, or shine around the Albert Park Lake track. Meet inside the MSAC foyer ready to start the warm-up at 6pm.
- Long Course athletes: 10km
- Short Course athletes: 5km
- New/Beginner athletes: 1-2km

Note: There will be NO session at The Tan this week, so make sure you join us at Albert Park! Let’s finish the winter block with a bang and see the progress you’ve worked so hard for.

ATHLETE RESULTS

Racing Across the Globe!

We love celebrating our squad's race results, and this week, we're showcasing two athletes who have taken on some tough challenges!

First up is Claire Hodgart, who competed at the World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Townsville in the Aquathlon. This race, a Run-Swim-Run format, included a 2.5km run, 1km swim, and another 2.5km run. It takes incredible fitness (and a bit of magic!) to switch from running to swimming and then back to running again, but Claire handled it with ease. In fact, she was so consistent that she clocked almost identical times for both 2.5km runs! With that kind of pace and precision, it’s no surprise she finished 6th in her age group—phenomenal work, Claire!

Next, we have Mike Khan, who tackled the Hard Man Valentia Sprint Triathlon in Ireland while traveling. This challenging event featured a swim from Renard Pier across Valentia Harbour, followed by a tough 4km climb on the bike before traversing the scenic island. The final leg was a 5km out-and-back run with a downhill finish. Mike finished strong with a time of 1:31:28. Racing abroad, especially in Ireland’s rugged landscapes, is no small feat - well done, Mike!

Congrats to both Claire and Mike for getting out there and representing the squad across different parts of the world. We’re always proud to celebrate your achievements, wherever you race!
