Powering Through the Build

We’re deep into the cycle, Build Week #2 of our classic three-week periodisation cycle. If you’re unfamiliar with (or have forgotten) how these cycles work, here’s a quick refresher: we load up across two weeks (build, build), then absorb and recover in the third. These ups and downs are the secret to long-term gains. No one stays at their peak all year round.  And trying to do so is a one-way ticket to burnout. So don’t fight the rhythm. Lean into it.

We’re also continuing our Winter Base Training phase, which means plenty of endurance work, strength development and technical refinement. Think of this as the base of your fitness pyramid. The bigger and stronger the base, the higher your peak. Whether it's hitting a pool, showing up for Hot Laps, or sticking to your program during these colder months, it all matters. Time Trials continue this month, your best chance to benchmark, reassess and improve. You can’t improve what you don’t measure, so make them count.

On that note... Thursday Hot Laps.
We hate to name and shame, but... no one showed up last Thursday morning despite the dry weather. Your coach was there. The track was ready. The opportunity was missed. So let this be your sign...we’re back in routine. Tuesday morning and Thursday morning sessions are on. Get up, gear up and make the most of your mornings!

This Week’s Ride: Choose Your Challenge

Coach Ollie has set the challenge for this weekend, and it’s all about strength-building on the bike. Here’s the plan depending on your level:

🔹 Novice to Intermediate Riders
Stick to flat or slightly undulating terrain. Ride from Elwood or Mordialloc and head south towards Frankston. This will give you a great endurance hit-out while keeping things manageable.

🔹 Intermediate to Advanced Riders
Time to head for the hills. Ride into The Dandenongs, leaving from Wantirna Mall or North Road, Brighton. Bring your climbing legs and be ready for a strength-focused session.

For all riders:

  • Follow your prescribed program distances
  • Bring nutrition, spares, money and your phone
  • Dress appropriately for the weather
  • Tri-Alliance riding kit is mandatory for safety and visibility

As always, check with your coach if you’re unsure what’s right for you.

Let’s Wrap It Up
We’re in the middle of winter, the heart of base training and smack-bang in a build week. So, take this moment to double down on your efforts. Build the habits. Bank the sessions. Because when race season rolls around, all those cold mornings and rainy rides will pay off.

Stay consistent, stay strong and we’ll see you out there!
