RECOVERY MONTH

coach-at-elwood

We hope you all had a great Easter and consumed just the right amount of chocolate and hot cross buns to see you through until next year!  If you’re anything like us, then the four days was the perfect break to refresh and enjoy some downtime with friends and family.  And how about the little burst of sunny weather… please!  Elwood was literally picture perfect on Thursday night.  So much so that a little bundle of joy even joined in, taking to the open water for a swim.  Starting him early!

We were sorry to hear that some folks missed out on receiving the newsletter to their inboxes…. again last week (argh!).  We continue to work on this, but from what we’re seeing at out end is that everything is distributed without issue, so thanks to those who let us know.  Nevertheless, I wanted to share how you can view each and every newsletter published straight from our site!  So, if you ever find yourself thinking, ‘was there a NL this week?’, just follow the steps below and you’ll be as good as gold.

And just in case you did miss the NL, we’ve decided to pop the recent results back in this edition as we didn’t want anyone missing out on seeing them.

The next big thing on the agenda is to get our heads around the training schedule, which is linked to our training phases and a little complicated by the late races in the season.  I’ve included a full explanation about what we are doing, what we’re not doing and what is changing below.  Good idea to get your head around all the training updates.

And equally as important is our favourite Lorne camp, held each Winter.  Ollie is working closely with the camp staff at Lorne Surf Life Saving Club to bring it all together. I’m sure you can all appreciate the delicate nature of … well, organising everything post 2020, so more details to follow shortly.  For now, we are just asking for an indication of athlete attendance.  Please read right to the bottom of this NL to help us out.

And lastly, we want to wish all athletes heading up to Challenge Shepparton all the very best for their races on Sunday.  Unfortunately we won't be able to be there with you in person, but we will definitely be there in spirit.  Looking forward to hearing all your race stories.

The Weekly Transition

We know there have been some problems lately with the distribution of the newsletter.  Initially it was with Gmail and most recently it has been with Outlook which impacts Hotmail accounts as well.  The problem has been with the receiving server so from our end it looks as though everything has gone through good as gold.  This is frustrating, for both you and us, as we often don’t know there is an issue unless someone tells us.

But…the good news is, you can quickly and easily check if there has been a newsletter sent out, so you never have to miss out again!

These can all be found on the Tri-Alliance VIC site, following these steps:

  1. Load the VIC homepage https://vic.tri-alliance.com/
  2. Use The Huddle drop down menu (top right)
  3. Select News https://vic.tri-alliance.com/news/

This will bring up all the most recently published newsletters and articles…voila!

Special mention to the two teams that took part in Geelong 70.3 - your results were updated after the initial distribution, but may have been missed by some.  Well done Scotty/Kurt/Jacinta and Simon/Fik/Pam for all your efforts!

Overview

As April is our recovery month and transition into the May technique block, the timetable begins to look and feel a little different.  This is sometimes confusing to those who are used to the routine of the past couple of months.  Even more so when we decided to add an extra week of traditional training to work with those athletes building for Shepparton.  So, let me give you an overview to help you know what’s going on.

A key date in our timeline is the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. This is when we traditionally hold our Winter Training Camp and when we build on from base & technique training, to add endurance to our technique.

  • No Tuesday or Thursday morning sessions until after Queen’s Bday (mid June).
  • Thursday night run sessions (The Tan & Essendon) commence from the beginning of May.  Until then it's fun & fitness at Elwood for SC and training as usual for LC.
  • Saturday riding will be social latte rides for April, followed by endurance rides for May and onto hills after Queen’s Bday.
  • Sunday long swim and long runs will remain at Elwood for all of April. Sunday long runs will begin from May (MSAC & Fairfield).

Winter Running

Most of you will know, that in the off-season we move our focus from pace and race to strength and build.  So, on Thursday nights we will R-U-N.  There will be two sessions (The Tan and Maribyrnong), where coaches will work with athletes on building fitness, whilst also focusing on technique, hill strength and intervals.  Both sessions begin at 6:15pm.  But as mentioned above, we will continue at Elwood for the time being, so these run sessions will begin from May.

Hot Laps/Logs

We are hitting the pause button on Hot Laps/Logs.  We feel the infrastructure now occupying the Albert Park Lake circuit is making it too risky to conduct an intensive bike session.  We will be looking to add an online session to the timetable over the off season.
But for now, those who raced should be enjoying some recovery time.  Those who don't have any races coming up should be in recovery mode.  And if you don't fall into either of those two categories and really feel like you need to ride, then get an hour of power in on the trainer to start the day off right!

Training Phases

For the majority of our athletes, April is the month to recover and have some time off from triathlon. Recovery at the end of a racing season is extremely important and will have a direct impact on your training and more importantly - racing, over the next season.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF A RECOVERY AND TRANSITION PHASE?

  • Physiological Recovery
  • Psychological Recovery
  • Immune System Recovery
  • Recovery from recurring or niggling injuries

We will be looking to put together a line up of activities for the month of April, which are aimed at allowing you to have a break from ‘normal’ triathlon training and have some FUN while still maintaining fitness.  Keep an eye out on the socials for further details.

TRAINING CAMP

Triathlon Training Camp
Surround Yourself With People Who Get It

One of the best things to do over Winter is to get strong!   And one of the best ways to do it, is with an intensive hit-out at our Winter training camp!

You get to surround yourself with like-minded people, live and train like a pro and forget about all the other worries of the world while you eat, sleep, train, repeat! This is held on the Queen's Birthday long weekend in Lorne.

We are trying our best to make this happen this year and what would really help would be to get an idea of numbers.  We're asking you to please take the 1min to complete this form to let us know what you're thinking.  It's even helpful to know if you are not coming, so we can plan accordingly.
