Welcome to Winter (officially)

winter-ride-mordi

What another amazing week it has been for the squad. We hope you're feeling the positive effects of your dedicated technique work and recognizing the progress you've made thus far. We love seeing you all strive for excellence and remember that every stride counts on the path to success. Keep up the fantastic effort!

Get ready, because this Friday, we kick off our highly anticipated winter training camp at Anglesea and we can hardly contain our excitement!  This four-day retreat will be an incredible opportunity to fine-tune our skills, strengthen our bodies and bonds as a team, and set the stage for the upcoming season. If you haven't signed up yet, you'll regret missing out on this immersive weekend filled with dedicated training sessions, expert coaching, and valuable insights to propel your performance to new heights. We have an action-packed schedule, including swimming skills and open water sessions, cycling endurance challenges, and invigorating run workouts. FOMO, anyone?

But before we go, please take note of a few changes to our training sessions this week to align with our training phase:

  • On Tuesday, the bike session will be an online FTP test beginning at 6 pm for all athletes. Please find the link and details below.
  • On Thursday, the run session will be a time trial at Albert Park Lake starting at 6 pm for all athletes. Further details are provided below.
  • From Friday to Monday, the only coached sessions will be those at the camp. There will be no scheduled sessions in Melbourne. Athletes not attending the camp are encouraged to follow their training programs.

Speaking of time trials and tracking progress, kudos to everyone who completed their first swim time trial last Wednesday. This experience provided an opportunity to gather valuable data for your profiles. We have included the results below, and remember, your next chance to measure your growth will be in six weeks' time. Just imagine the incredible improvements you can make between now and then!

As promised, we extend a warm welcome to Elle, our newest addition to the coaching staff. Allow us to introduce her by sharing a little bit about her background and coaching philosophy. Check out the blog below, and the article also where Elle shares her insights on how to make the most of winter training!

In the spirit of sharing knowledge, Coach Gaz recently contributed a thought-provoking post to the symposium this weekend. It is highly relevant for all athletes, particularly as we increase our riding time. This also got us thinking about reintroducing the bike maintenance sessions, so stay tuned for an upcoming workshop!

As we eagerly count down the days to the camp, take a moment to finalize your preparations. Pack your swim gear, running shoes, cycling essentials, and, most importantly, bring along those positive attitudes! This camp will undoubtedly push us beyond our comfort zones, but it is in these challenging moments that we truly discover our potential. Let's make the winter training camp at Anglesea a remarkable milestone in our triathlon journey.

Wishing you all the best for the week ahead.  Stay strong, team!

Introducing Coach Elle

We're thrilled to introduce you to the newest member of our coaching staff, Elle!

Elle started out in triathlon when she was 12, and from this moment on she loved the sport, and knew that it would be her passion.

After a few years of racing in age-group, she decided to get into racing Elite, which she went on to compete as a Junior and then with Under 23s. During this time, she was a part of the Triathlon Victoria Development Program and competed in both Victorian and Interstate races.

In 2018, Elle went to the Age Group World Championships on the Gold Coast which was one of her favourite experiences.

Apart from Triathlon, she also competed in Criterium cycling racing, Duathlons and Cross Country.

Elle’s coaching approach is to make the sport as enjoyable as possible, helping athletes reach their goals and to manage and prevent injuries.

You will see Elle on the pool deck Monday nights (with Ollie & Weekesy), at The Tan on a Thursday and out on the roads with you on a Saturday.  There's more to come and we'll keep you updated with all the exciting details.

ICYMI...Gaz's Thoughts

As we approach the winter rides and the camp you all need to be cognisant (new word) of the idea of being “self-sufficient" on the bike!  Water, nutrition, phone (charged), spare tubes, pump… don’t expect or rely on others being there to bail you out! Overestimate what you’ll need!  During these rides you will be further away from “civilisation" and bike shops are a luxury that you’ll rarely find!

Remember to periodically check your bike and particularly the tyres! Without putting too fine a point on it, your safety relies on those few square centimetres of tyre which contacts the road**!! (See below). As a tyre gets older, it gets softer and more easily distorted, it accumulates damage and what is already usually a fine tread pattern, wears down! So basically…"if in doubt…replace it”!

Same with lights! Get good ones… spend the extra dollars to know they are reliable, bright and waterproof!

If you need someone to show you how to change a tyre… ask Greg! Or another experienced rider! Just not anyone with the initials CG or GR or Gaz or…

**this of course depends on the amount of pressure in the tyre, and therefore rolling resistance… but let’s not get started on that again.

“There’s no such thing as bad weather – just bad clothing choices.”

When you’re riding on a cold, wet and windy day, you want to be as warm and as comfortable as you can. We have a guide for those new to Winter riding, to help you avoid learning from a very cold and miserable experience of your own!

The guide talks about a lot of gear and you can wear some or (like me) often all of it at once. The key is LAYERS. Even on the coldest day, you will heat up as you grind up the hills and then become freezing cold as the wind slices through you on the descents or you hit a gully where it appears all the cold air was hiding and waiting to slap you off your bike!
