It’s Build Week 1! Time to shift gears and kick off the next cycle with some renewed energy. After all, Build Weeks are where the magic happens - those consistent efforts you’ve been putting in are about to start paying off, so let’s make them count! This is your chance to build on that solid foundation we’ve been laying over the last couple of months, so don’t let up now.

Speaking of months—welcome to September! We’ve powered through Winter Base Training in July, focusing on endurance, technique, and strength, and in August, we doubled down on strength and endurance. But before we start thinking about speed, we’ve got two more crucial weeks of strength and endurance work to go. Make the most of them! The final push in these next two weeks will set you up perfectly as we prepare to shift into Speed Training.

Now, let’s take a moment to shout out the athletes who have been killing it with their consistency! We’ve noticed more and more of you turning up at sessions, ticking those boxes, and really putting in the hard yards. The effort is showing - whether it's strength gains, improved endurance, or smashing that last effort in your run session. It’s all adding up, and we couldn’t be prouder. Keep that momentum going!

For a bit of fun this week, we’ve added a new section called "Dear Coach", where we tackle some funny Q&As. It’s all in good humour, so have a read and a laugh - you might just see some familiar training scenarios in there!

And remember, as a Tri-Alliance annual member, you’ve got access to a pretty sweet discount in the 2XU Triathlon Series, which officially came into play on August 30. Be sure to read all the details below and take advantage of those savings.

Lastly, sessions are as timetabled with two ride locations and one run location this week. So, no excuses - get out there, keep pushing, and let’s make Build Week 1 a strong start to the month!

STRENGTH PHASE

Dandenongs Winter Ride

Make the Most of It!

As we near the end of our Strength & Endurance phase, these final two weeks are pivotal in setting the stage for your upcoming Speed Training. This phase has been all about building a strong foundation - developing endurance, reinforcing technique, and improving overall strength. But there’s still work to be done before we shift gears.

The focus now should be on continuing to build those essential muscles and pushing your endurance to the next level. Every session you complete helps solidify your base, ensuring your body is strong and resilient enough to handle the demands of speed training without risking injury.

Think of this as the final stretch - an opportunity to iron out any kinks in your technique and give your aerobic system the boost it needs. The gains you make during this time will pay dividends when we hit the fast-paced training that lies ahead.

So, stay committed, stay consistent, and take full advantage of these last two weeks. Your hard work will pave the way for your best performances in the season to come!

What Do You Think?

Dear Coach,
I’ve been really busy lately, so I’ve decided to cut my training time in half. Instead of doing the full workouts, I’m just focusing on the parts I like - mainly the warm-ups and the cool-downs. It’s the best of both worlds, right? I mean, how important can those middle bits really be?

Sincerely,
Half-Hearted Henry
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Half-Hearted Henry,

Ah, the classic “Warm-Up Warrior” strategy. While it’s true that warm-ups and cool-downs are important, I regret to inform you that the middle bits are, in fact, where all the magic happens. Skipping the main workout is like baking a cake but deciding the batter is optional - sure, the icing is tasty, but it won’t hold up on its own.

So, unless your race goal is to become the world’s most prepared stretcher, I’d recommend tackling those middle bits with the same enthusiasm you have for your warm-ups. Trust me, your finish line photo will thank you!

Stay strong,
Coach

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Coach,
I noticed that my favourite pro triathlete skips his long runs every now and then, so I figured I could do the same. If it works for the pros, it should work for me, right? I’m aiming for that pro status, so I’ve been selectively cutting out the workouts that I think I don’t need. What’s the harm in that?
Yours Truly,
Pro-in-the-Making Patty
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Pro-in-the-Making Patty,
Aspiring to the ways of the pros! While I commend your dedication to studying your idols, there’s a slight problem with your approach. Pros sometimes adjust their training because they’ve put in years (sometimes decades) of consistent work. They’ve earned the flexibility to skip a session or two without falling off the performance cliff.
But here’s the kicker: those pros didn’t get to where they are by cherry-picking workouts early on. They followed the plan, built a strong foundation, and only then could they afford a few well-timed shortcuts. So, unless you’ve secretly been training at a pro level for the last 20 years, I’d suggest sticking to the full program. Your future pro self will thank you.
Keep grinding,
Coach
