KEEP THE GOOD TIMES ROLLING

We are well and truly in the depths of Build Week 2, so take comfort in knowing that we are all in the same boat.  Yes, it is supposed to be feeling tough.  Yes, you are probably feeling tired.  And yes, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  Remember back to last week when we talked through our 3-week periodization in our programs?  And the importance of riding the peaks and troughs for adaptation to occur?  And no doubt you went on to learn more about the training zone and phases of training…???  We hope so, as we cannot stress the importance of understanding your training and knowing where you are and where you are heading.  If you don’t know the purpose of each session, how can you possibly assign appropriate intensity and appreciate the steps you are taking toward the bigger picture?  If you didn’t get a chance (!) maybe head back and do it this week :)

Thank you to everyone who came along to our Team Meeting last week.  It was very successful and provided the perfect opportunity to gather information, share experiences and set goals for the upcoming season.  But as everyone there knows, the next step is helping one another to stay motivated and be accountable.  Below are the links to continue this conversation and get connected.

Over the weekend, we had a range of athletes competing across the globe!  Make sure you follow the link to hear all about the Gold Coast marathon festival, Challenge Roth and the NYC triathlon in the Weekend Wrap Up.

This week we’ve also included some important info on elastic laces, start times of morning training sessions in July, Eddy’s movie pick and the important deets for the weekend training sessions.  And for a little bit of fun ( = social time!), we thought it might be a good idea to organise a MOVIE NIGHT for the upcoming release of We Are Triathletes on the 8th August.  Make sure you read the info and let us know asap if you’re interested in hanging out….with popcorn!

Without further ado, it’s time for you all to ….. R E A D    O N

Eddy's Pick - What to Watch
Hi Folks, I've been receiving lots of suggestions for this section in our NL. Thank you heaps for your participation. This week my recommendation is also Andy's recommendation: The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young.
The Barkley Marathons is an ultramarathon trail race held in Frozen Head State Park near Wartburg, Tennessee. Runners may elect a "fun run" of 97 km or the full course of 160 km (distances are approximate). The race is limited to a 60-hour period, and takes place in late March or early April of each year.  The Barkley is limited to 40 runners and usually fills up quickly the day registration opens. Requirements and times to submit an entry application are a closely guarded secret with no details advertised publicly. Potential entrants must complete an essay on "Why I Should be Allowed to Run in the Barkley", pay a $1.60 application fee, and complete other requirements subject to change. If accepted, an entrant receives a "letter of condolence". Upon arriving, new entrants (first time runners) are required to bring a license plate from their state/country as part of the entrance fee. Previous racers are required to mail in an additional "fee" which in the past has included things such as a white shirt, socks, or a flannel shirt, as a donation for being a non-finisher. Prior finishers of the marathon who return to run again must submit a pack of Camel cigarettes as part of the registration fee. Race bib number one is always given to the person deemed to be the least likely to finish one lap out of all who have applied; a "human sacrifice", as Cantrell calls it.
The course itself, which has changed distance, route, and elevation many times since its inaugural run, currently consists of a 32 km unmarked loop with no aid stations except water at two points along the route. The loop begins and ends at the yellow road gate where the runners' and supporters' parked cars stay. Runners of the 160km version run this loop five times, taking a counterclockwise direction for loops three and four, followed by each runner alternating direction on loop five, after the first-placed runner's choice. Runners of the 97km "fun run" complete three circuits of the loop. With 16,500m of accumulated vertical climb, the 160km run is considered to be one of the more challenging ultramarathons held in the United States, if not the world.
Have fun! ;) Cheers, Eddy.
