It’s Race Week, Team! 🚀

That’s right, we’ve officially hit Race Week with Race #4 of the 2XU Series coming up this weekend at Sandringham. This course is a bit more challenging than the other venues, but that’s what makes it such a great opportunity to test yourself and see how far you’ve come. Plus, for those chasing big goals, this race is an official AusTriathlon Age Group Team Qualifying Race for the 2025 Wollongong World Triathlon Championships - so expect a stacked field and some fierce competition. It’s the perfect chance to rise to the occasion and see what you’ve got!

A special shout-out to Coach Gaz, whose operation went well. He’s now home recovering, and while it may take some time before he’s back in action, we’re sending him all our best for a smooth and speedy recovery. Rest up, Gaz - we’re all thinking of you!

This week’s newsletter includes a piece called "Run Light, Run Right," all about keeping your run form sharp and not letting things slip, especially when fatigue kicks in. There’s a quick summary below, plus a link to the extended version if you want to dive deeper.

A quick reminder for this Saturday morning’s pre-race session at Sandringham, which will replace the usual short course combo. It’s a great way to shake out the legs, get familiar with the course, and dial in your race-day mindset. And speaking of race day - we need volunteers! Race weekends don’t run themselves (as much as we wish they did), and that’s where our awesome squad comes in. Whether you’ve got 30 minutes or a few hours to spare, lending a hand makes a massive difference to the team.

All sessions are updated on the timetable as usual, with just one change: no coached sessions on Sunday as all our coaches will be out in full force at Sandringham, supporting, coaching, and officiating.

Bonus Bits:

  • Interested in triathlon performance? Check out the Triathlete Peak Performance Symposium happening in Melbourne CBD on Saturday, 8 February, run by Sports Medicine Australia. We’ve got a special offer - use promo code SMATRI_01 for $155 off the non-member rate, bringing tickets down to $240. Follow this link for details: Triathlete Symposium
  • Looking for an entry-level road bike? Martha is selling her Pinarello road bike - a fantastic option, regularly serviced (most recently in January), and ready for a new home. Perfect if you’re starting out or looking for a reliable second ride.  Reach out to Martha or contact us and we'll put you in touch!

It’s shaping up to be a big week, team. Let’s bring the energy, support each other, and get ready to race hard. We can’t wait to cheer you on this weekend! 💪

Run Light, Run Right

If you’re anything like most triathletes, running form can slip once you’re deep into race season or juggling intense training blocks. We get it - after you’ve clocked countless kilometers, it’s easy to go on autopilot. But here’s the thing: honing your form now can pay off big-time come race day.

First, let’s talk posture. Even seasoned runners can end up with hunched shoulders or a bobbing head once fatigue sets in. Stand tall, keep your chest open, and let your arms swing naturally by your sides. Think “proud posture,” like you’re about to take a finish-line photo.

Next, tackle cadence. If you’re shuffling along at too few steps per minute, you’re stressing your joints more than necessary. Aim for a quicker turnover.  Start by counting your steps for 30 seconds and see if you can edge that number up next time. If you’ve got a running watch, check its cadence readout to keep yourself honest.

Finally, don’t skip the drills. High knees, butt kicks, and strides might feel “old school,” but they’re proven to improve form and neuromuscular coordination. Slot these into your warm-up twice a week. Even 5–10 minutes can sharpen your mechanics.

Yes, you’ve heard these tips before - but be honest: are you actually practicing them? Give your form the same attention you give your swim or bike. It’s Build Week 2, and refining technique now will help you go the distance (faster) when the next race rolls around. Run light, run right, and watch the gains follow.

2XU Race Sandringham

Pre-Race Session Sandringham

This Saturday morning's session is designed to get you feeling race-day ready. Think of it as your dress rehearsal - minus the nerves, but with all the action.

What to Bring?
Everything. Yep, bring all your swim, bike, and run gear because you’ll be diving headfirst (literally) into every leg of the race. This is your chance to test out everything you plan to use on race day (trisuits, nutrition, socks, goggles, the works). No surprises on race day = happy athlete.

What’s the Plan?
We’ll kick things off with a ride, hitting parts of the bike course so you can get familiar with the terrain and practice your pacing. Once you’re back, it’s straight into the run - no faffing about. We’ll cover sections of the run course to dial in your rhythm when the legs are feeling a bit “post-bike wobbly.” Finally, we’ll cool things down with an open water swim, just to keep you honest.

Where to Meet?
We’ll all meet at the top of Jetty Rd, near Beach Rd. You’ll be riding first, so arrive ready to roll. Leave your bags and belongings in your car for now. After the ride, we’ll regroup on Trevor Barker Oval, where you can stash your gear while you head out for the run. After that, it’s swim time to wrap up the session.

We Need Your Help This Race Weekend!

Race weekends don’t run themselves (unfortunately), and that’s where you come in! Whether you’ve got 30 minutes to spare or can lend a hand for a full session, your support makes a massive difference to the squad.

You can either shoot us an email now to let us know you’re keen, or just rock up on the day at the times below. Every extra set of hands lightens the load, and we promise the good vibes are worth it.

Here’s Where We’ll Need You:

  • Saturday - Tent Set-Up: From 8:30am – Many hands make light work, and the tent doesn’t put itself up (we’ve asked… it said no).
  • Saturday - Try the Tri Session: From 9:30am – Our coaches will be busy with tent set-up, so extra hands to help our newbies with transition practice would be super helpful.
  • Saturday - Tips & Tricks Clinic: From 12:00pm – Help out with keeping things running smoothly while we share race-day wisdom with the squad.
  • Sunday - TriKids Support: Meet at the TA Tent at 6:30am for a quick check-in before the 6:45am briefing in transition. If you’re a morning person, this is your time to shine!
  • Sunday - Tent Pack-Down: From 11:00am – Stick around after the race, help pack down, and we’ll all head home a little faster (with our sanity intact).

Whether you’re racing, spectating, or just popping by, lending a hand makes a huge difference. Thanks in advance for being part of what makes this squad so awesome! 💙💛
