So, funny story... our Build Week 1 newsletter from last Monday was ready to fire you up and hit those Speed Training goals, but the tech gods had other plans! Due to a server issue (we’re blaming the crons, whatever they are), we've realised that last week’s newsletter never actually made it to your inbox. But don’t worry - our training tips haven’t aged a day, and now you’re getting a double-the-motivation edition to cover both Build Week 1 and 2.

The Week That Was: Build Week 1 Recap

Last week kicked off the Speed Training Phase, and we hope you made the most of it! If you missed out on reading, no worries, we’ve included those handy articles again so you can still catch up:

  • Transitioning from Road Bike to TT Bike: Learn how to get the most efficiency out of your ride.
  • Speed Training Myths Debunked: Let’s separate fact from fiction so you can attack your speed sessions with confidence.

Coach Ollie took a group of athletes down to the Bellarine Peninsula for a long weekend training spike. According to the athletes, it was a huge success, and they’re feeling more prepared and confident heading into their next training phase. Some highlights include:

"This is the first time my watch has said I’m productive."
"Feels like the race is doable now."
"The camp was too short. Couldn’t get enough!"
"Only 240 more kilometres than last week's effort!"

Ollie also shares his own insights and reflections from the weekend below. He observed incredible progress from the athletes, both mentally and physically, and says that the camp atmosphere brought out a level of focus and commitment that will make a lasting impact on their race prep. Make sure to read his full reflection for all the details.

Meanwhile, Coach Greg held down the fort with the Saturday and Sunday sessions in Melbourne. Sunday’s run was a little quiet—maybe some of you were recovering from AFL Grand Final celebrations? In all seriousness, a massive thank you to Coach Greg for leading another fantastic winter training block at Fairfield. These sessions have been brilliant for building strength, and we couldn’t have asked for a better coach to lead the way!

The Week Ahead: Build Week 2

Now, onto this week! It’s Build Week 2, which means we're right in the thick of a speed training cycle. This is the time to push harder, build on last week’s efforts, and maximise your gains. Speed training is all about precision and intensity, so keep that focus sharp.  These sessions will set you up for big results in the weeks to come.

Saturday Ride: We’re all leaving from Elwood Beach at 6:30 AM, so set your alarms and come prepared!
Sunday Morning: Long swim and long run sessions will also be from Elwood Beach, and The General is looking forward to seeing lots of you there.

And heads up - Daylight Savings kicks in this Sunday morning! Don’t forget to change your clocks. With the time change, this will also mean morning rides will be a bit darker for the next month, so make sure your lights are charged and ready.

Speaking of changes, Daylight savings means we’re switching to the Summer Training Timetable soon! Thursday nights will move to Elwood Beach for the fan-favourite Combo Session, and Saturday mornings will feature Combo Sessions for the Short Course athletes, while the Long Course crew continues with their long rides.

Mark your calendars: The first Thursday Combo Session is on Thursday 17th October, and the first Saturday Combo Session kicks off on Saturday 12th October.

Important heads up: The Thursday night session on October 10th (during Recovery Week) will be a Time Trial at Albert Park Lake. We’re giving you notice now, so you don’t plan to be at Elwood that night.  This is your chance to measure your progress and track how far you’ve come!

Lastly, be mindful that Around the Bay is happening this Sunday, which might increase traffic in the area. Be sure to allow extra time to park and get to the session in Elwood.

That’s it for this week.  Speed, consistency, and maybe a little extra daylight with the time change! Let’s hit this new phase with everything we’ve got.

Building Strength, Resilience & Trust

This past weekend, I had the privilege of taking a group of our squad down to the Bellarine Peninsula for a long weekend training spike. It was a focused, high-intensity weekend, designed to push the athletes beyond their usual limits, with a specific training load that balanced intensity with recovery.

The purpose of a spike weekend like this is simple: to shake things up. You immerse yourself in a block of intense, focused training that helps you find new ground - both physically and mentally. For some, it was a chance to fine-tune their pacing, adjust nutrition strategies and explore what their intensity levels should feel like on race day. For others, it was a deep dive into the mental side of the sport, pushing psychological boundaries and testing their belief in their own resilience.

One of the great takeaways was the feedback we received.  Athletes walked away saying how important it was to "trust the process, not the hype". They felt the culture we’re rebuilding come to life over the weekend. Training camps like this allow athletes to fully immerse themselves in the standards we’re setting, to truly test the program, and see the benefits of buying into it. The real value comes when you try it out, follow the plan, and watch the results unfold.

It helped that we had a great group.  Positive, motivated athletes whose fitness levels complemented each other, making the sessions feel cohesive and purposeful. The synergy allowed everyone to gain new insights into their training. When you're surrounded by like-minded individuals with the same drive, the learning curve steepens, and everyone benefits.

This weekend wasn’t just about hitting the numbers; it was about reinforcing the mindset we’ve been cultivating. We’re building something solid together.  A culture of trust, consistency, and resilience. And after this weekend, it’s clear that the buy-in is real.

Looking forward to seeing the results from this training block unfold!

Catch you at the next session,
Ollie

The Speed Phase Starts Now!

As of last week, we’re entering the highly anticipated Speed Phase of our training! With less than three months until race season, it's time to shift gears and step up the intensity.

Short course athletes will now dive into threshold training - those tough sessions designed to push your limits and boost your speed.

Long course athletes will focus on maintaining endurance while incorporating speed work to enhance efficiency and stamina during those long races.

For our beginners, this is a critical time to continue building your base fitness while honing triathlon-specific skills like transitions and technique. No matter your level, this phase is key to blending the strength and endurance you've built so far with the speed required for peak race performance.

The efforts you put in during this phase will lay the foundation for race day success.

Making the Shift from Roadie to TT

As we kick off the speed phase, now’s the perfect time to talk about something that can give you a serious edge - moving from your road bike to your TT bike. Here’s why it’s worth considering:

  1. Aerodynamics = Speed – The TT bike is built for maximum aerodynamic efficiency, helping you slice through the wind and gain serious speed on flat or rolling courses. Perfect for when you’re looking to shave seconds (or minutes!) off your race times.

  2. Position for Power – The TT bike’s aggressive riding position allows for better power transfer to the pedals, especially during those fast, all-out efforts. As we ramp up speed training, getting familiar with this position can help you maintain higher speeds for longer.

  3. Getting Comfortable Takes Time – If you’re new to the TT bike, now’s the time to practice. The setup can feel a little awkward at first, but incorporating TT sessions into your speed work will help you adapt and be ready to crush it on race day.

  4. When to Stick with the Roadie – Don’t hang up the road bike just yet! If you’re hitting hilly or technical courses, the road bike may still be your best option. But for flat, fast efforts (like Time Trials!), the TT bike reigns supreme.

  5. Dial in Your Fit – To really unlock the benefits of your TT bike, it’s crucial to get your fit right. Our Head Coach Ollie offers bike fits using Retül software to help you find the perfect setup for maximum comfort and performance.

Speed Training Myths Debunked

As we dive into the speed phase, let’s clear up some common misconceptions about speed training that might be holding you back:

  1. Myth: Speedwork is all about going flat out.
Reality: While pushing your limits is part of it, effective speed training focuses on controlled efforts and proper technique. It’s about building speed gradually and efficiently.

  2. Myth: It’s just for fast people.
Reality: Speed training benefits everyone, regardless of your current pace. It helps improve overall performance and endurance, making you a more well-rounded athlete.

  3. Myth: Speed training = risk of injury.
Reality: Like any training, speed work needs to be approached smartly. Proper warm-ups, cool-downs, and a gradual increase in intensity can actually enhance your resilience and reduce injury risk.
