~2nd October 2023 ~

Hey there, Awesome Athletes!

Welcome back to another edition of our weekly newsletter, and guess what? We've officially survived Build Week #1 of our 3-week periodisation! If you're feeling a little pie-eyed, just remember, it's a sign that you're one step closer to becoming the super athlete we know you are. Now, let's get into the good stuff.

First things first, let's take a moment to appreciate the fact that Collingwood are the 2023 AFL Premiers! It was a Magpie-tastic weekend, and we're not just saying that because we're completely biased. Watching athletes perform at the highest level is inspiring, and we can all learn a thing or two from their dedication and commitment to those crucial 1%-ers. Different sports, different codes, one goal – success!

Now, onto the next big thing that happened over the weekend, and that was Daylight Savings…yay to one hour less sleep, said no one ever! But yay to longer evenings and making the most of more daylight hours. It's like when Collingwood fans revel in the glory of a premiership win, savouring the sweet taste of victory! Anyway, we're heading back to Elwood Beach for our combo sessions and open water swimming, as we've now official switched over the summer training timetable. Throwing some combo sessions into your training will supercharge your adaptability and race-readiness. The first Elwood session kicks off this Thursday, October 5th.

By now, you've probably caught wind of the Wednesday swim timetable shake-up. Starting this week on October 4th, everyone will be splashing around at 5:45am on Wednesday mornings. But don't worry, we're as adaptable as a Collingwood midfielder in the heat of the game and we’ve still got the number one goal in mind of catering to everyone’s needs. So, our beginners/Lane 0-ers will have 3 lanes across the indoor lap pool with Coach Steph, and all other swimmers will have another 3 lanes in the outdoor pool.

Time to meet the TA family again! This week, we're chatting with Shrid (one half of the "Sri-brothers"). His story is a rollercoaster of highs and lows, but he shows an unwavering determination that keeps him moving forward. Have a read about his triathlon journey below - it's as exciting as Jordan De Goey's long-range goal from outside 50m after the quarter-time siren!

Now, a heads-up for those of us navigating Beach Rd in the next couple of weekends. Much like Collingwood fans flooding to the MCG, Around the Bay on October 8th and Melbourne Marathon Fest on October 15th will bring road closures and increased traffic in the area. Plan your trips wisely and allow some extra time to get to your sessions.

Finally, shoutout to all the friendly faces who gathered at Elwood Beach on Friday morning, soaking up the sunshine and making the most of the public holiday. Unfortunately, the weather might not be as cooperative for our official Elwood return, but rain, hail, or shine (just not lightning), we'll be there ready to conquer the combo sessions (just like Nick Daicos with a game-high 29 disposals and a goal)!

And there you have it, folks! All the juicy details you need are just a scroll away, and you know the drill – contact us if you need anything. Time to keep those gears turning, train smart, stay awesome….just like the Collingwood Army!

*disclaimer: Collingwood references will be dialled down in forthcoming editions!

Officially Moved to the Summer Timetable

As we transition into the beautiful month of October, we're excited to talk about the shift in our training timetable to align with the upcoming Pre-Competition Phase. The ‘switch over’ happened in line with daylight savings and here's what you can expect from now on:

  • Brick/Combo Sessions (Thurs/Sat/Sun): These help you master the challenges of swiftly transitioning from water to bike and run. These sessions will improve your endurance and agility, essential skills for success.
  • Open Water Swimming Skills: Jump back into the bay and into the world of open water swimming. Perfect your technique and build the confidence needed to tackle the open water.
  • Triathlon-Specific Skills: Get ready to fine-tune your triathlon skills, including transitions. These sessions will make you more efficient and competitive on race day.

For our Long Course athletes, October will be a month of building volume and intensity in preparation for your key long course races in November and December. It's the perfect opportunity to train in some better weather and stretch to achieve those personal bests.

Here's what sessions have changed:

Thursdays have moved from running only to combo at Elwood Beach:

  • Enjoy a combo session or a dedicated run session. Please check your individual programs for details. Sessions commence at 6pm.

Saturday Morning Combo Session for Short Course Athletes:

  • Get ready to rock 'n roll by 7am. Don't forget to bring everything you need for swim, bike, and run - it's going to be a packed session!

Sunday Long Rides for Short Course Athletes:

  • Short Course athletes should schedule a long ride on Sunday mornings if it's on their programs.

Sunday Morning Combo at Elwood Beach:

  • Open Water Swim: Kick off the day with a 7am open water swim.
  • Long Run: Following the swim, we have an 8am long run session. Make sure to check your programs for specific distances.
  • Important Note: Open Water swim sessions are intended for confident and competent athletes only.

We're looking forward to seeing you at these important combo sessions!

Where Should I Be?

We've got a change to our Wednesday swim sessions that we want everyone to be aware of.

What's the Plan?

From Wednesday 4th October, all athletes will swim on a Wednesday morning, and we'll be split over 2 pools.  You be in either of the following sessions:

5:45am - Intermediate/Advanced athletes only – Outdoor 50m pool. Lanes 0, 1, 2.  Main set will be mainly intensive intervals working within 1:45 min time cycles, helping to improve both strength and fitness. 75 min session. 3 lanes + 2 coaches.

5:45am - Beginner/Intermediate athletes – Indoor 25m Lap pool. Lanes 3, 4, 5.  Designed to provide a comfortable and supportive environment for those who are emerging in their triathlon journey or looking to refine their foundational swimming techniques. 60min session.  3 lanes + 1 coach.

This change brings our entire squad together on Wednesday mornings, and ensures that you continue to receive the high-quality coaching and training environment that you deserve.

IMPORTANT NEWS

Disruption to Distribution

We've got some important news to share regarding your favourite KODA Electrolyte Tablets. But don't worry, it's not all gloom and doom – we've got a plan to keep you fuelled and hydrated through the upcoming months!

You may have already seen, that as of November 30, 2023, there are some changes happening in the world of tablet-based products. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has rolled out new regulations, and guess what? Tablets, including our beloved KODA effervescent ones, are now officially classified as 'medicine.' Yup, you heard it right!

Now, let's rewind a bit. Before a fiery mishap back in July 2020, their trusty contract manufacturer had a TGA license. Transitioning would've been a breeze. But following that curveball, there was a switch to a new manufacturer, who is currently in the process of obtaining their TGA license, which, as you might have guessed, takes time. KODA is looking at somewhere in 2024 for the green light.

Here's the catch – there's going to be a gap between November 30, 2023, when these new regulations kick in, and when KODA finally secure their TGA license. During this period, we also won't be able to provide you with KODA Electrolyte Tablets under the current labelling.

So, here's the game plan: If you're gearing up for races from December to March and KODA is your go-to training and racing fuel, it's time to stock up! You can place your order with us until the end of November 2023. Grab as much as you need to see you through this gap and keep those energy levels up during your races. The Berry, Lemon, and Orange flavours have lengthy best-before dates, so you can rest easy knowing your supply will last.
