Yesterday, the picturesque town of Busselton hosted the 20th anniversary of IRONMAN Western Australia, bringing athletes from across the globe to its iconic flat and fast course. Not known for cool conditions, this year’s event threw in some challenges with low temps, strong winds from the start and afternoon showers to add complexity. Our squad brought the energy, with 26 athletes competing across the full and 70.3 distances, creating a sea of yellow and blue that was hard to miss. The event MCs frequently commented on the incredible Tri-Alliance representation as our athletes crossed the finish line throughout the day.
It was a hugely successful day filled with first-time finishes, personal bests and monumental achievements. Head Coach Ollie described it as one of the most rewarding days in his career, helping every athlete cross the line and achieve their goals.
Every athlete’s journey to the finish line is deeply personal, shaped by countless hours of dedication, sacrifices and resilience. Whether it was their first time taking on the challenge or another chapter in their Ironman story, each race was a unique achievement they can all be proud of. Special Mentions We know every athlete has a story to tell and a journey worth sharing. And whilst we celebrate them all, we can’t share them all today. Here are a few moments that stood out and captured the TA spirit:
Jen Schuster: Jen’s journey to the finish line has been nothing short of extraordinary. Despite battling degenerative shoulder and hip issues, she has remained relentlessly positive and determined, earning her the nickname "the smiling assassin." Yesterday, she achieved her decade-long dream of completing an Ironman - a goal she’s worked tirelessly toward. Sharing in this special moment was her partner, Stephen Tilders, who first got into triathlon to support her passion. After years of training together and achieving personal bests, Stephen finally got to be at the finish line to celebrate her Ironman success - a fitting redemption for missing her only 70.3 finish years ago (yes, she’s still reminding him about that!).
James Margenberg: Three years ago, James took his first steps when a friend encouraged him to go for a casual bike ride. Fast forward to yesterday, and he crossed the finish line of his first full-distance Ironman in Busselton. His day was exceptional, with everything clicking into place, especially during a standout bike leg. Along the way, James has undergone a remarkable transformation, shedding significant weight and completely redefining what’s possible through hard work and dedication. Reflecting on his journey before the race, James shared, "It’s been a wild ride, and I can’t believe how far I’ve come." Inspiring doesn’t even begin to cover it - well done, James! Greg (The General): Racing under "legend status," Greg lined up for what he called his final Ironman - a fitting culmination of a journey that has inspired countless athletes over the years. Known for his grit, stubbornness, and heart, Greg approached the day with the same determination that has defined his Ironman career. Before the race, Head Coach Ollie shared, "Every moment out there will be a celebration of everything you’ve achieved in this sport." And that’s exactly what Greg delivered - a celebration of resilience, hard work, and a love for the sport. Whether this was truly his final lap or not, there’s no doubt Greg’s journey leaves an enduring legacy. A huge thank you to all the 70.3 participants and supporters who stuck around in the rain and wind to cheer on the Ironman athletes. I’ve heard firsthand from our Ironman competitors how much your energy meant to them, especially during those tough headwind stretches on the run. Your enthusiasm and encouragement made a massive difference, keeping spirits high and putting smiles on faces when they were needed most. Thank you for embodying the true spirit of our squad!
As our athletes return from WA, let’s rally around them to congratulate their incredible achievements, hear their stories, and celebrate their hard work in person.
