THE END OF SUMMER

elwood-triathlon-race-morning

What a weekend and what a way to see out the end of Summer!  We haven’t had many of those hot sunny days, but at least we got one last one before we stepped into Autumn.  And didn’t it make Race #3 at Elwood the picture-perfect place to be.

Huge congrats to all those who raced on Sunday.  It was flat and fast out there and despite the small drop in field numbers, there was fierce competition.  We had close to 40 athletes racing, with 13 top 10 placings.  But what was even more rewarding, was the number of happy athletes returning to the TA Taj with happy, beaming faces and the news that they had achieved new PBs.  This is what it’s all about.  See link below for a full list of race results.

Take the time you need this week to recover off the back of racing.  Pay attention to the information from Ollie about periodisation and the importance of active recovery.

Once again, I’ll take a moment to encourage you to read the articles about pool etiquette and the format of our swim sessions.  The new times are proving to be very popular, so to ensure smooth running of the lanes, it’s important we all understand the expectations when squad swimming at MSAC.

And a big one this week is the road works around Albert Park Lake.  This actually is going to impact our sessions, both Hot Laps and Tuesday morning runs, but we have come up with alternatives, so read on to know what they are.  You should also pay attention to the closed roads which impact your travel to swim sessions and Lakeside Sports Med.

TRAINING UPDATES

2021 Albert-Park-Track-Modifications
Albert Park Road Closures

The resurfacing and circuit modifications project is being completed in three phases:

  • Phase one included the widening of the pit lane, which has now been completed.
  • The second phase is circuit modification works that will take place between February and July 2021.
  • The final phase is resurfacing works, which is planned to take place following the Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix 2021 event in November.

Scheduled road closures for early-stage circuit modification works are detailed below:

Lakeside Drive (Albert Road – Ross Gregory Drive) will be closed from Tuesday 2 March 2021 to Sunday 11 April 2021 to undertake a road realignment. Lakeside Drive will also be closed for approximately three days in late-April.

Lakeside Drive and Ross Gregory Drive Intersection will be closed from Tuesday 2 March 2021 to Thursday 11 March 2021 to undertake civil works on the intersection realignment. Ross Gregory Drive will also be closed for a further two weeks from Saturday 10 April 2021 until Friday 23 April 2021.

Aughtie Drive will require two separate closures. The first will be for two days in early April and the second will be for three days in late April. Updated information will be provided on this page once finalised.

During the mentioned work, cycling access will be limited to Aughtie Drive only.  This will impact out Hot Laps session on a Thursday morning.

We anticipate being able to run Hot Logs, as an alternative.  These will be trialed this week with Coach Ollie, with further decisions to be made afterwards.

Please take a look at the map for more details.

Albert Park Lake Alt Meeting Point
Change to Tuesday Morning Run Sessions

Given the difficulty in easily accessing our usual meeting point for run sessions, we are going to switch things up for a while.  We are going to move to the north end of the lake on Tuesday mornings, until all road works are complete.  This will allow ample (and free up until 8am) parking for everyone, in the VIS car park.

Coaches will meet you at Coot Picnic Area.  We have all been there before, you will know this part of the lake well, but if in doubt….Google it!

We want Long Course athletes there for a 5:45am start, with main squad and Try-the-Tri athletes ready to run at 6am.

PROGRAM CYCLES

Know What's Happening

There’s been a few questions around understanding your programs, so let's update you.  With the current race schedule being every 2-weeks, our periodisation will now work in fortnight blocks, taking precedence over our traditional 3-week training cycle.  To briefly explain, we will still be training with intensity up to the Wednesday, tapering from Thursday through to race day, recovering until the Tuesday and then increasing our intensity again from the Wednesday onwards, working through for 8 days until we taper again for the next race.  This will happen up until the end of March.

Note: the performance gains (if any) will come from recovering off the back of races, as racing is generally pushed at an intensity higher than training. Therefore, recovering from races correctly will be key.  Hear this…DO NOT push through or have FOMO from trying to train too much in between races

There's also quite a few athletes with tight bodies.  Don't neglect those niggles and get in touch with the team at Lakeside earlier rather than later.
