KEEP CALM BECAUSE WINTER IS COMING

winter-riding-for-coffee

So that’s another week ticked off.  That’s one more week of base fitness for some athletes; one more week of building towards Cairns for others; and one more week of recovery for others still!  Wherever you are in your training/racing/recovery phase, know that everyone is on a different journey….a different path, so this is going to look different for each and every one of us.  What you do have to know is…. where YOU are, where YOU should be and the plan to get YOU to where YOU want to go.  On that note, we have been busy planning our first Team Meeting for the season, which will coincide with our annual goal setting session.  This night is super important (for all of the reasons I mentioned above) as well as helping you plan out the rest of your season, whilst receiving some valuable insight from coaches and current athletes.  We’re flagging this now as ‘Upcoming’, and as soon as we have the date locked in, we’ll let you know.  So, stay tuned!

We are so excited that our annual Lorne camp is going ahead this year, catering to those athletes who are ready and in a position to spike their training for their Winter build. The program is jam- packed with not only a beautiful backdrop for  training, but also seminars, workshops, wear tests and practical hands on coaching sessions - all aimed at providing you with a great base of information to arm you for the season ahead.  This is the absolute last call for bookings as numbers need to finalized ASAP.  Make sure you speak to a coach if you're still planning on joining in the fun!

As we revive our weekend sessions, let's focus a little closer to home, with Beach Rd.  We all know it can get incredibly busy with cyclists.  We know that not every cyclist is educated and responsible when out on the road.  But what we also know, is that it is our responsibility to keep everyone safe and promote respectful road use when we are out on bunch rides (and when I say “our”…I mean a collective OUR’!).  Time to lay it all out there…..if you haven’t done so already, you should have read our Road Safety and Bunch Cycling Etiquette guidelines on our website (link in article below).  At the very least, you should know basic road rules, how to ride next to other people and how to signal.  This is expected in all group rides.  We don’t need to see athletes flogging themselves down Beach Rd in the off-season and making the ride unsafe for our group and for others that we are passing.  Calm down….it’s May for goodness sake!!!  There’s a long way to go before race time.  Above all else, just treat other road users with respect and courtesy……and don’t be THAT guy!

Let's get the band back together, work towards our goals, but most importantly...Stay warm!

ROAD CYCLING TIPS

Bike Safety and Ethics
In a triathlon, you spend the most amount of time on your bike, so naturally this translates to time spent training on the bike.  At Tri Alliance, we want to make sure all our athletes understand and adhere to cycling road rules and general bike etiquette, especially when you are out on group rides.
“Cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as other road users. Whatever vehicle you drive, the golden rule is to treat other road users with respect and courtesy. All road users should drive or ride safely and obey the traffic rules at all times.
Please take some time to make yourself aware of road cycling rules, safety and ethics - to keep yourself, our group and other road users safe.

There is a clear expectation that to ride in Tri Alliance bunch rides, you know your responsibility.
RUN TIME TRIALS

Set Yourself a Benchmark

As with the swim and bike (FTP), run time trials are held every 6 weeks over the Winter training block.  This session is run around the Albert Park Lake walking track (approx 4.7kms), rain, hail or shine!  If you're not sure why it's important to time trial, make sure you go back and read the segment from last week - no skipping over it this time!

Meet inside MSAC main reception by Lakeside Sports Medicine, ready to begin the warm up at 6pm.

Suggested Distances:

Long Course athletes – 10kms

Short Course athletes – 5kms

New/Beginner athletes 1-2kms

Get yourself a timed run this week that you can use as a benchmark to track your progress over the season.  It's more important than you probably realize.  Remember, it's just you against the clock - despite what you think, no one else really cares!

THE G FILES

The Truth Is Not Out There

I know you haven't heard from me for a while, but I'm still here and I haven't changed!

Many of you will know that I was incapacitated for some time, and while I am now back out there training to a small degree, this lay off has only served to make me even grumpier and less tolerant  than I was. Hard to believe, I know, but anyway on we go!

A lot has happened since GFII went out to you…. you know… we won the 2XU series trophy, had some amazing results at Port Macquarie and of course celebrated the EOSP where there was much dancing, carousing, and other frivolities (by all except your scribe who behaved himself very well, and no one wanted to dance with anyway!) (So we’ll see WHO reads at least this far!)

I also lost my bike, well it was stolen, so consider what additional effect this has had on my already sunny demeanour !

So congratulations to us all, but there's still plenty I need to get off my chest, and like I said at the EOSP you need to read all my articles! (“it will be worth it, if not for the sake of this song, but for the sake of your own peace of mind” - name the song please - Greg will know???)
