~ 28th August 2023 ~

Hope you're all riding high on the wave of accomplishment after wrapping up two build weeks! As we delve deeper into the heart of the training season, I'm here to remind you of a fundamental principle that's at the core of our training philosophy – recovery. Today marks the start of Recovery Week in our carefully crafted three-week periodisation cycle. Think of it as the TLC your muscles have been yearning for. But recovery isn't the stop button; it's the secret weapon to maximising your gains. Remember that old saying, "a stitch in time saves nine"? Well, a good recovery week saves you from nine potential roadblocks in your training journey. So, indulge those muscles and let them rejuvenate!

Speaking of journeys, let's jet off virtually to Finland – land of lakes and champions! We're sending a massive shoutout to our power duo, Jimmy and Dicko, who yesterday rocked the 70.3 World Champs. Now, due to the pesky time difference, we're keeping you on the edge of your seats for the full scoop, but we’re sure it’ll be worth the suspense. And in the meantime, let's raise our glasses high and say, "Onnittelut!" (that's Finnish for congratulations!)

Now, let's crank up the excitement meter a few notches – it's time to flood our fellow warrior, Andy Wood-Rich, with a virtual shower of good luck vibes. He's diving headfirst (quite literally!) into the ICON Livigno Xtreme Triathlon on September 1st. And what better way to boost his spirits than signing the good luck e-card? Trust me, your virtual cheers will be like a gust of wind beneath his wings on this epic journey!

Time to chat about that ticking clock. This is your last chance to secure your spot at our Pre-Season camp. You know the drill – race day success doesn't happen by chance; it happens by choice. And your choice should be crystal clear: embrace the training spike, and kickstart your racing season in style. Act fast though, because bookings slam shut on Wednesday at 5pm.

Hold on tight, because we're reviving a crowd favourite – "Meet the TA Family" is back, baby! It's more than just a segment; it's a deep dive into the heart and soul of our incredible squad. Beyond swim, bike, run, it's about connecting on a personal level, building relationships, and embracing the camaraderie that makes us more than just a team. This time, we're shining the spotlight on James, one of the fresher faces in our awesome Family.

Don’t forget, our wind trainer session is happening in real life this week at MSAC. Picture it: pedal-pushing, sweat-dripping, and Coach Gaz leading the charge. Meet us on the indoor pool deck from 6pm for a 6:15pm start.

And speaking of awesome updates, mark your calendars for September 6th! Why, you ask? Because we're introducing an extra swim squad session on Wednesday evenings, and there's an exciting twist to it! Our squad is growing, and with growth comes the opportunity to enhance your training experience. We want each member to shine with focused coaching. To accommodate this positive change, we will be dividing our Wednesday swim squad into two dedicated sessions. Oh, and keep an eye out for a familiar face making a return especially for this – it's the perfect coaching collaboration! Read all the details below.

As race days edge closer and closer, our run interval sessions are stretching out. Brighter mornings call for a brighter start, so we're kicking off Tuesday run gatherings at the sunshine-y time of 5:45am. You asked, we listened – now you can get through your set without the rush.

Hold onto your running shoes, because Thursday's run session is shaking things up with a time trial at Albert Park Lake. We're warming up at 6pm sharp. And guess what? That's not all – there's a pool time trial on Wednesday too. Why? Because progress thrives on measurement – you can't conquer what you don't quantify!

Heads up, team – the TriClub discount for the 2XU Triathlon Series entries rolls in this Friday! And here's a friendly reminder of one of the fantastic perks of your Tri-Alliance Annual Membership – a whopping 20% off your race entries! It's time to cash in on those savings and race under the yellow and blue!

Before we wrap up, let's throw it back to last weekend and give a shoutout to Sarah and Paul, who rocked the Townsville Triathlon & Multisport Festival. Injuries? Pfft, not enough to stop Team Oscar’s Heros from snagging 7th place in the mixed relays and Paul tackling the sprint duathlon event like a champ. Warm weather, awesome results – what more could you ask for?

Lastly, let's not forget all the awesome dads out there. Father's Day is right around the corner, so let's make sure to shower them with all the love and appreciation they deserve.

Alright, that's the scoop for this week. Keep rocking, keep rolling, and keep being unstoppable!

ICON LIVIGNO XTREME TRIATHLON

good-luck-andy

Cheering on Andy Wood-Rich!

Get ready to send those good vibes soaring because our very own Andy Wood-Rich is diving headfirst (literally!) into the ICON Livigno Xtreme Triathlon! And let's be honest, folks, this triathlon isn't just your regular run-of-the-mill Beach Rd gig. It's the kind that makes your Garmin shake in its digital boots!

Andy's strapping on his swim cap for a 3.8 km aquatic adventure in the breathtaking Livigno lake, all before the sun has even risen. Next up, he's tackling a mind-boggling 195km bike ride through the Alps' toughest and most iconic passes – we're talking about the Bernina and Stelvio Passes here, people! And if you thought that was impressive, just wait for the grand finale: a 42.2km run that winds its way through trails, white roads, asphalt, and everything in between, all at high altitude. Phew, anyone else reaching for a water bottle just thinking about it?

Now, let's not sugar-coat it. We know Andy's in for a challenge that's tougher than convincing yourself that one more slice of pizza is a good idea. There'll be moments of "Why did I sign up for this again?" and probably some conversations with his own shoes. But amidst the pain and fatigue, we're hoping for those sweet moments of euphoria and breathtaking scenery that'll make him forget all about the blisters and burning quads.

And hey, let's not forget about Ambassador Jo, who's taking on the heroic role of Andy's chief supporter. Cheering is no joke, especially when you're practically climbing mountains with your voice alone! We're pretty sure Jo's got this, though – after all, she's trained in the art of enthusiastic yelling and handing out encouraging words with Olympic-level precision.

So, folks, it's time to rally the virtual troops! Let's flood Andy's inbox with more well-wishes than he has energy gels. You've got until Thursday lunchtime to sign the e-card and share all the positivity you've got. Andy's big day is on Friday, September 1st, and we're all rooting for him to tear up those Alps like a true mountain goat!

Hang in there, Andy! The hills might be steep, but so is your determination. You've got this – one stroke, pedal, and step at a time!

We are convinced that the move will offer numerous advantages that align with your training needs. Key benefits include:

Swim-Tips

Swim Change from September

Our squad continues to flourish, and with growth comes the opportunity to enhance your training experience. We're thrilled to announce a slight adjustment to our swim squad sessions that we believe will truly benefit each and every one of you.

Starting from September 6th, we will be introducing an additional Wednesday swim squad session, with a new time slot. We understand that change can be met with mixed emotions, but please rest assured that these adjustments are being made with your progress and growth in mind.

Why the Change?

Our squad has been steadily growing, and as our family expands, we want to ensure that every member receives the attention, guidance, and coaching they need to excel. To accommodate this, we will be dividing our Wednesday swim squad into two dedicated sessions:

Wednesday 5:45am Session: This session is tailored for our intermediate to advanced swimmers. These swimmers are consistently hitting 1:45s per/100m, and time trialling 500m in approx. 9mins. These swimmers are tumble turning and this session is an opportunity for them to continue pushing boundaries, challenging limits, and refining skills amongst peers who share their level of expertise.

Wednesday 6:30pm Session: This session is geared towards beginner to low-intermediate swimmers. These swimmers are swimming consecutive 100m intervals above 1:45. This evening session is designed to provide a comfortable and supportive environment for those who are emerging in their triathlon journey or looking to refine their foundational swimming techniques.

Why It's a Positive Step

We want to emphasise that these changes are about creating the best possible learning environment for each individual. By offering targeted sessions, we're enabling our dedicated coaches to focus their expertise precisely where it's needed most. For those joining the evening session, this means receiving more pertinent feedback and tailored coaching strategies to help you progress effectively. Likewise, the morning session offers a suitable atmosphere for our more experienced swimmers to challenge themselves and drive performance gains.

Navigating the Change

We understand that change can bring about questions and uncertainty. If you're unsure which session is best suited for you, we encourage you to have an open conversation with one of our coaches. They're here to guide you and ensure that your training aligns with your skill level and aspirations.

Welcome Back, Coach Steph!

But that's not all – we have an exciting announcement to make this change even more special. We're thrilled to welcome back a seasoned specialist, for the perfect collaboration. A fan-favourite and a coach hand-picked for their dedication and skill, the one and only Coach Steph is returning to our team especially to work with a tailored focus on Wednesday evening sessions. Her return is set to propel our swimmers towards even greater achievements. For those who haven't yet had the privilege of getting to know this amazing person, there will be more details about Steph in next week's newsletter.

As we continue to stride forward in our journey as a squad, we're excited to bring these enhancements to our swim squad sessions. Our aim is to foster an environment where each member can thrive and progress, regardless of their level. The camaraderie and support that define the TA Family will remain as strong as ever!

Albert-Park-Run-Session

New Run Start Time

As we dive deeper into the season and inch closer to race day, our interval training sessions naturally stretch out a bit. And with the mornings getting brighter, we've decided to kick off our Tuesday morning run gatherings at 5:45am. Don't worry, the meeting spot is staying put. We're just tugging the clock a tad to make sure you can complete your set without that whole rushed vibe.

Everybody's invited to these sessions—yup, you too! They are scheduled during Build Weeks 1 and 2. Oh, and let's not forget the importance of hitting the snooze button on Tuesday mornings during Recovery Weeks. That's when the gains really do their magic, so take a breather.

We've picked the gravel track around Albert Park Lake because it's easier on your muscles and joints, giving them a break from excess strain. Plus, with the to-and-fro intervals, our Head Coach will be your guide, dishing out tips and tricks every step of the way. This means you're in for a steady stream of feedback on how you're handling your technique, form, and pacing.

Bottom line: these sessions are the real deal in your training program, so we're hoping to see a solid turnout from now on.

*Additional note, this Thursday run session with be a Time Trial at Albert Park Lake! See details in timetable below.
