WINTER IS COMING

winter-riding-3

Another week and another set of changes announced!  It’s positive to learn that Melbournians are generally doing the right thing and the easing of restrictions must mean we are heading in the right direction.  We are getting really good at rolling with them at the moment, adapting as necessary, but certainly not being complacent, knowing that we still should be acting with cautious optimism.

We heard from a lot of keen beans immediately following the announcement of pools reopening next week…and we mean, immediately!  And whilst we share in your excitement, let’s take a closer look and what exactly has been proposed;

Up to 20 patrons per pool with a limit of 3 people per lane

At this stage, MSAC have not decided how and when they will be reopening the facility and logistically, we understand why.  This also does not leave a lot of scope for the resumption of squad sessions at this point.  So whilst we are thrilled to hear that it is possible to go swimming, we will continue to work on your strength and technique through our coached dryland swim sessions, until such time that it becomes suitable for squads to resume.

Better news, is that community sport groups will be able to train in groups of 20 outdoors, maintaining 1.5m apart.  So, from the beginning of June, you will not need to book in for the run sessions, although we will continue with the 2 separate meeting points, to encourage even greater participation.

In terms of weekend rides, as per previous advice, you are allowed to ride outdoors if you choose to.  But, to adhere to the 1.5m social distancing rule, you will need to ride in single file as Vic Road Laws states that cyclists should not be more than 1.5m apart when riding two abreast.  We will be continuing with our virtual Saturday morning ride sessions, offering both an online coached option and group Zwift events.  We are seeing some great results from the consistency of these sessions, supported by the structured nature of the workout with increased control in your intensity and deliberate intervals.  There’s definitely no slacking off here!

This week we’ve included information about the importance of time trialling (I’m sure you’ve all seen it in your programs for this week and well done to those for completing a sneaky FTP on Tuesday night!) and how to communicate these results with your coach.  There’s also details about the group run sessions, a reminder to send your goal setting homework through to The General, our Meet the TA Family member, Les and a little fun with a Physical Challenge being thrown your way!

Keep well.  Keep training.  And Keep connected.

TIME TRIALLING

run-time-trials
You Can't Manage What You Don't Measure

Time trials are an important part of our training structure as they allow you (and us!) to monitor your progress over certain training periods to ensure you continue to develop and improve. It’s not just about the time, as conditions can vary over the period of time that we conduct our time trials, however, how you perform and how you recover are strong indications of how you are progressing.

Over the winter months and leading into the main race season, particularly for Sprint, Olympic and Half Ironman racing we concentrate on technique, strength and endurance. Time trials give you an indication of how your strength training is progressing and you should expect to see consistency over time or some improvement. For some of you there will be major gains, for others there will be some minor improvements, and for others you may even go a little slower. You cannot expect to PB every time you time trial, however, you should expect to be around a similar time that you have recorded previously.

Remember, these phases of our training are all about building your expertise, strength, endurance and technique, to get you to the start line where you really do want to swim, bike or run your PB. It’s no good being a star on the training track and then leaving it all behind come race day!

GROUP RUN SESSIONS

Great Turnout
An excited bunch of athletes greeted us Thursday night, for our return to the group run session, despite the less-than-ideal weather that was on the cards! And an equally enthusiastic group ran the Fairfield trails with The General on Sunday morning.  Great to see the group getting back together and to have all athletes following appropriate guidelines.

This Thursday night session is a programmed time trial.  We will still have two separate locations at Albert Park Lake (short & long course) for meeting and convening.  Check the timetable for exact locations.

These sessions are strictly bookings only and capped at 10 participants per session.  You cannot turn up to the session without making a booking.

All athletes must:
* maintain physical distancing by keeping at least 1.5 metres between you and another person
* carry and care for all personal belongings, including water bottles
* cover mouths and noses if coughing or sneezing
* not attend if feeling unwell

Please book your spot through the online timetable.  You still have the option to GO Virtual for all run sessions, via the link in your program.  Bear in mind that coaches will be facilitating a timed run session, so please try not to call in during the first or last 15mins for this week.
SENDING DATA

Athlete Time Trial Results
As we begin time trialling over the next couple of months, it’s going to be really important to collect your results, keep a record and maybe even share this with your coach.  This goes a long way in not only helping you to stay accountable, but to track your progress, reset goals and align your future training plans to reach your desired targets.

The best (and only) way we can effectively collate this for you is for you to send the data to us in a workable format.

After completing a run or swim time trial or an FTP test, please download your .csv file from Garmin Connect and email this through to your coach.

Steps to getting your data:

  • Log in to Garmin Connect
  • Select All Activities
  • Go into specific session
  • Click settings cog
  • Select export splits to CSV
  • Save and rename file to include your name, date and activity type

Keep these is a safe location and share with your coach if and when needed, via email.
GOAL SETTING

GOAL-SETTING
Time to Be Accountable
If you were in our recent Goal Setting Workshop, you will know that The General explained the importance of writing those goals down.  And to help keep you accountable and check in with you during the journey, he asked for you to email them through.  We thought we give you a reminder (or not-so-gentle nudge) that the time has come and he is waiting....

Meet the TA Family - Les

This week it's about time we got to know our other amazing ambassador, Les!  He's 'that' guy - that's always working hard behind the scenes, making sure everyone has what they need and will be found on race weekends meticulously stacking and packing (and repacking) the trailer!  We would not get through an event without him!
