More Than Just Miles

In This Edition

Well team… just like that, we roll back into Build Week #1 of our 3-week periodisation cycle.  And honestly, Recovery Week probably slipped by so quietly that some athletes barely even noticed it.

But that’s actually pretty normal at this time of year.

Right now, we’re still in that early Technique / Base / Endurance-building phase (or whatever fancy label you want to give it). The overall training load and intensity is still relatively controlled, so athletes don’t necessarily feel smashed enough to crave a dramatic recovery week.

This phase is less about surviving huge sessions, chasing peak fitness or crawling around sore for three days after training.

And much more about:
* consistency
* routine
* frequency
* technique
* and laying foundations.

That’s why Recovery Week in this phase can feel a little subtle.  The purpose isn’t necessarily to “fully recover from exhaustion.” It’s more about absorbing the work, resetting mentally, maintaining freshness and keeping consistency rolling.

Because right now?...Session consistency matters more than hero sessions.

Showing up 5-6 times consistently every week through winter will always beat:

  • one monster session
  • followed by three missed ones
  • because motivation disappeared the second it got cold and dark outside.

This phase rewards patience. And sometimes the hardest thing for endurance athletes to do… is NOT overdo it. So if you’re sitting there thinking: “I don’t really feel like I needed Recovery Week…” Good!

That probably means the process is working exactly as intended.

Just follow the program.
Trust the structure.
And keep stacking consistent weeks together.

That’s how fitness quietly gets built this time of year.

💛 More Than Just a Program

I saw something this week that stuck with me:

“Information is everywhere. And it’s free.
What most people lack is implementation.”

And honestly, it got me thinking about triathlon.

Because training information has never been easier to access. You can find workouts online, watch YouTube videos about pacing and nutrition, download generic programs, and listen to endless podcasts about performance.

But information alone has never been the thing that gets most athletes to the finish line feeling proud of what they’ve achieved.

Implementation is the hard part.

Consistency is hard.
Showing up through winter is hard.
Riding safely and predictably in a group is hard.
Holding yourself accountable is hard.
Building a strong training culture is hard.

That’s the stuff people often underestimate.

A good squad environment isn’t just “a place to train.” It’s something built collectively over years by athletes who commit to the process, contribute to the culture, support each other, and genuinely buy into what the group is trying to create.

And the interesting thing is… even athletes who decide they no longer need coaching or a program often still find themselves drawn back toward the environment.

Why?

Because deep down, they know the value was never just the session itself.

It was the people.
The standards.
The energy.
The accountability.
The shared experience of showing up together week after week.

That stuff matters.

And it only exists because our members continue to invest in it, support it, and help build it every single week.

Never take a good training environment for granted.

🌧️ Winter Is Knocking — Time to Dress Like an Endurance Athlete

You can definitely feel it now, can’t you?

The mornings are darker. The wind has a little more bite to it. And suddenly everyone is standing around before sessions pretending, “Nah I’m sweet”...while secretly freezing.

Technically we don’t even hit winter for another week… but Melbourne has clearly decided to get an early start. And honestly, this is where experienced endurance athletes start separating themselves from the “summer only” crowd.

Because winter training isn’t just about toughness.  It’s about preparation.

The athletes who train consistently through winter are usually the ones who:
* dress properly
* fuel properly
* recover properly
* and understand that comfort and safety actually matter.

Particularly on the bike. A cold, miserable rider:
* stops fuelling properly
* loses concentration
* makes poor decisions
* and ultimately gets less out of the session.

Whereas a rider who is warm, dry and comfortable?  Can actually focus on training.

That’s why we wanted to specifically highlight our TA Winter Cycling Jackets this week. And honestly… these things are absolute weapons for Melbourne riding conditions.

They’ve been specifically designed for exactly this type of weather:
* cold starts
* windy Beach Rd mornings
* damp conditions
* long winter rides
* and those awkward “not freezing but definitely not warm” Melbourne days.

Features include:
✅ Windtex front panels for wind protection
✅ Italian Roubaix fleece fabric for warmth and breathability
✅ Longer rear coverage for wet roads and spray
✅ Extended sleeve length for glove integration
✅ Rear pockets for winter essentials
✅ Distinct TA branding and visibility on the road

And following on from the culture conversation above…the branding matters too.
There’s something pretty powerful about seeing a group of TA athletes rolling together through winter in matching kit.

It creates:
* visibility
* professionalism
* identity
* and importantly… safety.

Drivers notice groups more easily when riders are consistently visible and identifiable. And during winter bunch riding, that absolutely matters.

Plus… let’s be honest…
the blue and yellow kit looks GOOD.

If you’ve been meaning to upgrade your winter riding gear, now is probably the time,  before we hit the proper middle of winter grind.

🎧 Did Anyone Actually Listen To Our Podcast?

Last week we shared our article: Realistic Triathlon Goal Setting for the 2026/27 Season

And hidden inside that article…
…was a short podcast episode with Ollie and I chatting through the topic.

Now here’s the thing.

Not ONE person mentioned:

  • our dulcet tones
  • our world-class banter
  • or what was clearly an award-worthy podcast performance.

Which leaves us with only two possibilities:

1️⃣ Nobody listened to it.
OR
2️⃣ Everyone listened to it and is trying not to hurt our feelings.

So we’ve decided we need proof. If you listened to the podcast, send either Ollie or me:

  • your favourite line
  • favourite moment
  • or literally any evidence you made it past the intro music.

And yes…there may or may not be a random TA towel up for grabs for someone who proves they actually listened!

But in all seriousness, the article itself is worth your time.  This isn’t just: “dream big and work hard.” It’s about:

  • realistic goal setting
  • planning around real life
  • balancing training with family/work
  • understanding what success actually looks like for YOU
  • and building goals that motivate rather than overwhelm.

You can also complete the worksheet and:

  • send it to Ollie
  • use it in a coaching consult
  • or simply use it for personal reflection.

Because athletes who improve long-term are rarely just “winging it.”  They usually have direction, structure, intention and clarity.

💛 Athlete News: Never Say Never

We received a message this week from Natalie that honestly just made us smile.

Natalie shared that she has officially qualified for the Sprint Distance World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain! 🇪🇸 And while plans are still being worked through, there’s now a very real possibility of pulling on the green and gold.

But that wasn’t the only milestone.

Over the weekend, Natalie also completed the Great Ocean Road ride with friends — ticking off an incredible 61km, which she said was her longest ride ever. Not only did she get through it comfortably, but she absolutely loved it.

And the best part?

Natalie finished her message with “Just thought I’d share with you how far I’ve come since our ‘Never say never’ email!”

Honestly… that’s what it’s all about.

Not just race results.
Not just qualifications.
But confidence. Growth. Momentum. Doing things you once thought were impossible.

Because so often in this sport, the biggest breakthroughs happen long before the finish line.  They happen the moment someone goes from “I could never do that…” to “Maybe I can.”

Massive congratulations Natalie...on the qualification, the ride, and the journey you’re on. We absolutely love seeing it.

And honestly…
we’d LOVE more stories like this.

If you:

  • completed something meaningful
  • achieved a goal
  • raced an event
  • overcame something challenging
  • or simply had a moment where you surprised yourself…

🇦🇺 The Road to Green & Gold Starts Early

Just when you thought the off-season might be calling… AusTriathlon has already opened the door to the next big goal.

July 2026 will feature the first National Selection Races for athletes chasing selection for the 2027 Australian Age Group Teams, with opportunities across both triathlon and multisport disciplines.

For triathletes dreaming of racing for Australia on the world stage, the destination in 2027 is:
🇩🇪 Hamburg, Germany — host of the 2027 World Triathlon Championship Finals.

For multisport athletes (duathlon, cross triathlon and related events), the destination is:
🇨🇦 Edmonton, Canada — host of the 2027 World Multisport Championships.

One of the key early selection races for Hamburg will be the Airlie Beach Triathlon Festival on Sunday 26 July 2026, which has been named as a National Selection Race for the Australian Age Group Team.

And honestly… Airlie Beach in winter isn’t a bad place to test yourself.

For athletes already building toward the 2026 World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, it also presents a perfect mid-year race opportunity and a chance to experience the selection environment early.

There are also early duathlon selection opportunities in July for athletes targeting Edmonton, including races in Queensland and Victoria.

What this means for TA athletes is simple:
👉 the next green and gold campaign starts earlier than you think.

If racing for Australia is even remotely on your radar, now is the time to start planning your pathway, mapping out your calendar, and understanding the selection process.

These races aren’t just winter hit-outs anymore — for some athletes, they could be the first major step toward a World Championship start line in 2027.

Hamburg is regarded as one of the most iconic triathlon venues in the world, with racing held through the heart of the city in front of massive crowds and an incredible atmosphere.

Edmonton meanwhile will host the world’s best multisport athletes across the duathlon and off-road disciplines.

Big goals start with early decisions.

💛 Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, winter training is where culture either strengthens… or disappears.

It’s easy to train when:

  • the sun is shining
  • races are every weekend
  • and motivation is naturally high.

But these months?
These are the character-building ones.

Cold mornings.
Wet roads.
Dark evenings.
Consistent sessions.
Quiet progress.

And honestly, this is where good athletes quietly separate themselves from the crowd.

Not through hero workouts.

But through:
* consistency
* accountability
* preparation
* and continuing to show up.

That’s what Build Week #1 is really about.

Not perfection.
Not smashing yourself.
Just building momentum again.

One session at a time.

See you out there,
💙💛
