❄️ WINTER IS HERE ❄️

The chilly morning sessions have arrived... But we won't give up!
Training through winter can be tough, but the personal gains you get by keeping up your training and the strength you'll build will be worth it (we promise).
It is important to be prepared for all sessions when it comes to wearing appropriate clothing or making sure you are keeping up your hydration. Keep reading below on our tips to be more prepared for your sessions.

On Sunday we had our first Fairfield session back with Greg and it was not one to miss! If you're wanting to improve your run, this informative session is perfect for all abilities who are wanting to improve their technique or to become a stronger runner.

Speaking of runners, apologies for the following omissions to last week's results list.  These two guys also had amazing races at the Great Ocean Road Running Festival and we want to congratulate them:
Nick Boekel - 23km half marathon - 2:05:47
Adam Vorich - 23km half marathon - 1:50:54

IT'S TIME TRIAL TIME
This Thursday we will be running a time trial session at Albert Park.  That means there is NO running at THE TAN this week!  This is not a 'race' against each other but a chance to see where you are at and to monitor your personal progress over the coming weeks. Meet at MSAC entrance and we will warm up to the starting point. Keep reading below for more information on the importance of Time Trials.

 See you at training!

TRAINING UPDATES
Winter-Riding-Attire
There's No Such Thing As Bad Weather - Just Bad Clothing Choices!

When you’re riding on a cold, wet and windy day, you want to be as warm and as comfortable as you can. This is a guide for those new to Winter riding, to help you avoid learning from a very cold and miserable experience of your own!

Hydrating During Winter is just as important as in Summer!

We know the importance of taking in fluids during the summer months, but winter needs THE same attention as well. As for endurance athletes, it is a genuine concern. You may not feel thirsty when you’re training in the cold, so you may be taking less sips. This can cause rapid dehydration. We lose a great deal of water from our bodies in the winter due to respiratory fluid loss through breathing. Our bodies also are working harder under the weight of extra clothing, and sweat evaporates quickly in cold, dry air. We should be focusing on our hydration needs during cold weather training to prevent body temperature from decreasing. We also suggest always having spare warm, dry clothes available when finished (especially after our Fairfield session when we will be dipping our legs in the river).

TIME TRIALLING
FTP-Test
You Can't Manage What You Don't Measure

Time trials are an important part of our training structure as they allow you (and us!) to monitor your progress over certain training periods to ensure you continue to develop and improve. It’s not just about the time, as conditions can vary over the period of time that we conduct our time trials, however, how you perform and how you recover are strong indications of how you are progressing.

Over the winter months and leading into the main race season, particularly for Sprint, Olympic and Half Ironman racing we concentrate on technique, strength and endurance. Time trials give you an indication of how your strength training is progressing and you should expect to see consistency over time or some improvement. For some of you there will be major gains, for others there will be some minor improvements, and for others you may even go a little slower. You cannot expect to PB every time you time trial, however, you should expect to be around a similar time that you have recorded previously.

Remember, these phases of our training are all about building your expertise, strength, endurance and technique, to get you to the start line where you really do want to swim, bike or run your PB. It’s no good being a star on the training track and then leaving it all behind come race day!
