I think everyone that rode on Saturday will agree that sessions like those are character building! Not only are you getting your session done (remember you cannot make up skipped sessions), but you are working on your physical skills as well as the all-important mental skills. There’s a lot to be said for mental toughness, resilience and good ole pure grit. You’ll be able to find opportunities to work on these characteristics in spadefuls over winter. You just have to be ready (and brave enough) to take the step as they arise. And Saturday was a great opportunity.
Speaking of mental toughness, you know where else you can work on that? At our Winter Training Camp in Anglesea! I dug up an article from an athlete who recounted her first time on that camp. In fact, she came up with a list of the 10 things she learned from the experience, and I have to say, many of them connect to my point above. It’s worth a read and will convince you that you need to take the step and commit!
You will also see some time trials coming into the programs from now on. Over the winter months and leading into the main race season, we concentrate on technique, strength and endurance. Time trials give you an indication of how your training is progressing and you should expect to see consistency or improvement over time. You cannot expect to PB every time you time trial; however, you should expect to be around a similar time that you have recorded previously.
And lastly, congrats to everyone who took part in an event at The Great Ocean Road Running Festival. There was everything on offer. From the 6km fun run, right up to the ultra 60kms. So, whatever your distance, kudos to you for getting out there and pushing yourself to reach new goals! |
