Take the opportunity!

wet-winter-ride

I think everyone that rode on Saturday will agree that sessions like those are character building!  Not only are you getting your session done (remember you cannot make up skipped sessions), but you are working on your physical skills as well as the all-important mental skills.  There’s a lot to be said for mental toughness, resilience and good ole pure grit.  You’ll be able to find opportunities to work on these characteristics in spadefuls over winter.  You just have to be ready (and brave enough) to take the step as they arise.  And Saturday was a great opportunity.

Speaking of mental toughness, you know where else you can work on that?  At our Winter Training Camp in Anglesea!  I dug up an article from an athlete who recounted her first time on that camp.  In fact, she came up with a list of the 10 things she learned from the experience, and I have to say, many of them connect to my point above.  It’s worth a read and will convince you that you need to take the step and commit!

You will also see some time trials coming into the programs from now on.  Over the winter months and leading into the main race season, we concentrate on technique, strength and endurance. Time trials give you an indication of how your training is progressing and you should expect to see consistency or improvement over time. You cannot expect to PB every time you time trial; however, you should expect to be around a similar time that you have recorded previously.

And lastly, congrats to everyone who took part in an event at The Great Ocean Road Running Festival.  There was everything on offer.  From the 6km fun run, right up to the ultra 60kms.  So, whatever your distance, kudos to you for getting out there and pushing yourself to reach new goals!

TRAINING CAMPS

Lorne Camp Hill Riding
10 Things I Learnt From Attending Winter Training Camp

As a first-time attendee of the Tri-Alliance Winter Training camp, I wanted to write down my thoughts and share my experience.  This year, the camp at Lorne was attended by 67 athletes and Coaches, each pushing themselves physically and mentally, while having fun and learning loads at the same time.

I went to camp aiming to merely survive and get through it without any major dramas. I exceeded my own expectations and not only survived but really enjoyed the achievements that came with the challenges!

TIME TRIALLING

TA Time Trial Albert Park Lake
You Can't Manage What You Don't Measure

Time trials are an important part of our training structure as they allow you (and us!) to monitor your progress over certain training periods to ensure you continue to develop and improve. It’s not just about the time, as conditions can vary over the period of time that we conduct our time trials, however, how you perform and how you recover are strong indications of how you are progressing.

Remember, these phases of our training are all about building your expertise, strength, endurance and technique, to get you to the start line where you really do want to swim, bike or run your PB. It’s no good being a star on the training track and then leaving it all behind come race day!

MSAC-swim-sessions
More Bodies = More Lanes
We're loving seeing so many of you at swim sessions each week and we want that to continue.  So, as we fill the lanes, we will book more.

From Monday 22nd May (Build Week) we will have 4 lanes available on Monday nights and Wednesday mornings.
Plenty of space for you to find the perfect spot and work on your technique.
Hot Laps
Tech Laps with Gaz
This Tuesday (23rd May), we will be consolidating the skills we have learnt over the past few weeks. This means riding cohesively in the group, maintaining your position in the group and holding a cadence of ~90rpm. From the following Tuesday (30th May), we will be progressing to learning other skills such as rolling turns and cornering. Combining these skills results in a cohesive group which can ride longer distances together. Remember we ride for the group. So regardless of your independent riding ability, you are always stronger in a group.

MSAC have requested that we do not block the doors to the main entrance.  When meeting Gaz, please move away from the doors and group in a place that allows pedestrian access and does not block anyone's path.

winter-cycling-gear

“There’s no such thing as bad weather – just bad clothing choices.”

When you’re riding on a cold, wet and windy day, you want to be as warm and as comfortable as you can. We have a guide for those new to Winter riding, to help you avoid learning from a very cold and miserable experience of your own!

The guide talks about a lot of gear and you can wear some or (like me) often all of it at once. The key is LAYERS. Even on the coldest day, you will heat up as you grind up the hills and then become freezing cold as the wind slices through you on the descents or you hit a gully where it appears all the cold air was hiding and waiting to slap you off your bike!
