PERSONAL BESTS ARE EARNED IN WINTER

Tri-Alliance-Latte-Ride

I think we can safely say that the weather has turned itself toward the roads of Winter, with no sign of an off ramp, U-turn or even an overpass to give us some relief. This is certainly a change from previous years where we have enjoyed warmer and northerly winds all the way up until June. No matter, it is these cooler and more challenging training months that build stronger athletes (both physically and mentally) and all the ground work is laid for the season ahead. In saying that, there should be just one thing on everyone’s lips right now and that is LORNE. C’mon…. you know it’s time. Time to jump start that Winter campaign of yours and get yourselves back into the routine. And let’s not forget... also having a weekend away with friends! Deposits for camp must be in by this Friday 25 May, with balances due the following Friday 1 June. If you haven’t had a chance to read our Ambassador’s recap of Lorne 2017, do it now and spare a moment to watch Kez’s video from last year to remind you of all the good times and get you in the mood. Time to put your money where your mouth is! #DontGetFOMO

In the weekend wrap up this week, we had a couple of athletes take on the Great Ocean Road Running Festival, the Tri Vic State Series awards breakfast, athletes working their way towards Ironman Cairns, Challenge Roth and Escape From Alcatraz and the ever-popular latte rides! There always seems to be so much going on, so make sure you drop us a line to keep us up to date with all your results.

We’ve also included a blog from Steph about swimming with snorkels, more info for you about Lorne, why Time Trial, a look at the new Mizuno Tri shoes, a call for contributors, and plenty more. So hop, skip and jump into your favourite possie…and read on!

Since we're back into the technique block, that means back to basics and the return of the snorkel to the pools.  A lot of people have questions about their use, so we turned to Steph-bassador to give you her thoughts on swimming with snorkels!

TIME TRIALLING

You Can't Manage What You Don't Measure
Time trials are an important part of our training structure as they allow you (and us!) to monitor your progress over certain training periods to ensure you continue to develop and improve. It’s not just about the time, as conditions can vary over the period of time that we conduct our time trials, however, how you perform and how you recover are strong indications of how you are progressing.

Over the winter months and leading into the main race season, particularly for Sprint, Olympic and Half Ironman racing we concentrate on technique, strength and endurance. Time trials give you an indication of how your strength training is progressing and you should expect to see consistency over time or some improvement. For some of you there will be major gains, for others there will be some minor improvements, and for others you may even go a little slower. You cannot expect to PB every time you time trial, however, you should expect to be around a similar time that you have recorded previously.

Remember, these phases of our training are all about building your expertise, strength, endurance and technique, to get you to the start line where you really do want to swim, bike or run your PB. It’s no good being a star on the training track and then leaving it all behind come race day!

TRAINING SESSIONS

Thursday Night's Have a New Venue

It’s time to kick start our Thursday night run sessions.  These will now be held at The Tan, a track around the around King's Domain and the Botanic Gardens.  Our winter run sessions are great for breaking down your stride, working on your technique and building strength from the ground up.  This session is for ALL athletes and will include technique, hills and interval running.  We meet at 6:10pm next to the trough, opposite the Swan Street Bridge (you can also Google “Pillars of Wisdom” and it’s close to there).  Be ready to start the warm up at 6:15pm, otherwise you may miss the group.  It’s a good idea to bring appropriate layers as it can get quite chilly.

ALTERNATE SESSIONS:
The General will also be running 2 additional sessions over the winter months.  You can meet at the Essendon Rowing Club (Car Park) at 6:15pm on a Thursday night, for a run session along the Maribyrnong River.  And each Sunday (beginning this week 20th May) you can meet at the Fairfield Park Boathouse (Car Park) at 8:00am for a long run session.  Come to these run sessions prepared for technique, functional strength and stretching activities....and the dulcet tones of The General!
