KEEPING IT ALL IN CHECK

life-balance

Another week, and another 7 days to settle into the new routine.  There’s been some great progress made over the short time we’ve been apart (you just have to ask Super Mario about his newfound flexibility), and there’ll be even more to come.  That is why this week we’ve included several articles around the benefits of dryland swim training, just in case you needed any reminding about why you should be joining these sessions.  We’ve also found a new resistance band deal, so hopefully some of you can jump on board and get your 2 sets at a relatively affordable price (other cheeky buggers immediately bumped up their prices as soon as everyone went in to lockdown!) and in time to join us when we begin our technique phase at the start of May.

Apologies in advance, but we had a last-minute change to our ZWIFT 101 workshop, due to coach’s commitments. It’s on TONIGHT!  Starting at 7:30pm, Coach Scotty will run through everything you need to know to get you started on this platform.  But don’t stress if this new time doesn’t suit, as we’ll be recording the session and I can forward the link to you after tonight.  Please get in touch with us in the next few days to receive the link.

ICYMI – we’ve retained the updated timetable changes, based off feedback from you.  Reminder that these took effect from Monday 20th and will continue through to the end of April, at which time we will review again. Please contact us if you have any ongoing feedback.

One article that particularly took our attention (thanks Edbassador!) was the blog by UK athlete Amy Kilpin.  It’s a really easy read, it’s quick and to the point but it really taps in to what a lot of us might have or continue to be feeling in the current climate.

And last but not least, Jordan released a video this week for our athletes, to outline the How, What and Why of athlete screenings at Lakeside.  We’ve included the link here if you did not see it.

Keep the communication coming our way. We like hearing how you are going, knowing what’s working and what we can help with, and believe it or not, yes, we also need to hear when things are not working as that’s the only way we can fix the problems.  So…remember Ollie’s favourite squeaky wheel theory…time to get the grease!

ONLINE TIMETABLE FEEDBACK & REVIEW

You speak - We listen

As mentioned last week, here are the ammended sessions we started this week and will continue with next week:

  • Wednesday Strength @ 6pm – 7pm + Wednesday Flex @ 7pm – 7:30pm
  • Thursday Hot Laps – 6:30am – 7:30am
  • Thursday Run – 5pm – 6pm + Thursday Flex – 6:30pm – 7pm
  • Friday Flex – 6pm – 6:30pm
  • Weekend Flex sessions - 9:30am - 10am

And as a recap, here’s an overview of some suggestions (with added commentary from the HC):

Can the strength exercises be varied?

The strength sessions are programmed in specific blocks, over time.  So, you will see the same exercises, with increasing sets/reps for each block.  This is deliberate.  For the best gain, these blocks need to be completed in order, before progressing to the next block.  This will allow the body to adapt and build appropriately.

Can Hot Laps start a bit later, so we get a sleep in?

Absolutely – great idea!  We will trial a new start time of 6:30am – 7:30am for the last 2 weeks of April.

Can Hot Laps be available on Zoom?

Yes, it can.  However, please bear in mind that if Hot Laps does not appear on your program, it is because this session is not advised for you at this point in the training phase.  There will be plenty of time for HLs coming up.  If you would like to attend HLs, please contact Ollie to discuss if this is appropriate and to obtain further details.

Can Thursday runs start earlier so we can avoid running in the dark?

Excellent idea and yes, we are available to facilitate this.  We will trial moving the Thursday night run session to 5pm – 6pm for the last 2 weeks of April.

Could we have some flexibility sessions a bit earlier?

Yes.  We can appreciate the juggle of training and dinner each evening and are working through this ourselves as we navigate a new timetable.  We agree and with some of the evening sessions we can tweak the times to accommodate.  For the last 2 weeks of April, we will move some sessions to an earlier timeslot.

MENTAL WELLBEING

Preparation is Everything - Making the Most of Lockdown Life as a Triathlete

This short read is perfect for what many of us are experiencing right now.  It talks about "stabilising your mental approach".  And more importantly, not surviving this challenging time, but preparing.

"I think it’s fair to say that at some point or another, everyone has struggled with this unexpected COVID-19 crisis. Mentally, physically, emotionally, professionally, financially – we are being challenged from every angle, and it’s not exactly an easy ride for anyone.

I’m not going to labour the Coronavirus point for too long as we all know what the situation is, I’m just going to give you an insight into how I reacted (and am continuing to react) to it."

Amy Kilpin is a UK triathlete embarking on an exciting journey in the world of triathlon and seeing how far she can take it. In 2012 Amy couldn’t swim one length of front crawl, didn’t own a bike and had spent most of her life as a self-classified ‘non-sporty’ person.  Her dreams are not to win, to be a world champion, to revel in the success and fame of top level elite triathlon. Her dream is to challenge heryself and discover what it takes to be the best that she can be.

How To Replace Your Swim Training

"If you are like most triathletes, swimming is a challenge right now, and by “challenge” we mean completely unavailable. Unless you are fortunate enough to have access to a private pool or a Vasa Ergometer, maintaining swim form is tough. Fortunately, there are some options to come out of this situation mitigating the damage to, and possibly even improving, your swim fitness."

Resistance Band Exercises to Improve Swim Strength and Technique

"Stretch cords are a versatile, underrated tool to use for developing strength and technique in the water. Many elite athletes carry their cords with them while traveling to facilitate an entire swim workout if a pool is not readily available, or to use for a race warm-up when not allowed in the water before an event."

FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH TRAINING

Resistance-Bands
NEW Band Deal

Resistance bands are simply a tool that helps you replicate any functional movement, while applying a strength enhancing, muscle building resistance. As a result, resistance band training will make movements and muscles stronger while simultaneously improving movement coordination.

But...now you need to know where to get your hands on them.  We have found a new deal, that looks to be the cheapest going around.  Cannot guarantee delivery time, so check that our for yourselevs.  You can also find them on eBay or anywhere really.

This link is offering deals for 2 sets (highly recommended as 1 set is only 1 length and you need double to do both arms at the same time).

It doesn't matter where you get your bands from - just make sure they have different tensions (colours) and MUST come with handles.  Shop around!
