It’s Build Week 2, team! You all know the importance of these Build Weeks.  They’re the backbone of our program, helping to strengthen the fitness you’ve been working hard to build. Every session adds another layer to your progress, so make sure you’re getting the most out of them.

The weather in Melbourne may not have been too kind these past few days, but that’s no excuse to slack off. If anything, it’s a reminder to take advantage of the sessions when we can. Sometimes we’ll have to shift gears - maybe a swim in the bay won’t be possible, or plans will have to change - but when the stars align and conditions are right, you’ve got to grab that opportunity with both hands. So, when you’re out there this week, give it everything you’ve got!

Under A Word from the Head Coach, Ollie’s got some wisdom for us all. He’s talking about something he calls The Mirror Test. It’s not about who shows up or who doesn’t; it’s about being accountable to yourself. At the end of the day, can you look in the mirror and say you gave it your best? That’s the real test.

A special shout-out this week goes to Mario, who’s taking on the Ironman World Championship in Kona this Saturday! We couldn’t be more proud to have him representing Tri-Alliance on the world stage. Good luck, Mario!  Race hard, enjoy the experience, and soak up every moment. We’ll be cheering you on from Melbourne!

And speaking of global races, a special shout-out this week goes to Paul and Tegan, who have had an exciting weekend on the world stage, both having qualified for the 2024 World Triathlon Age-Group Championships in Torremolinos, SpainIt’s always inspiring to see our squad members pushing boundaries and achieving incredible things.  Be sure to read all the details below and congratulate them when you see them.

In other exciting news, our team jerseys have just arrived at our door today! There’s nothing like suiting up in the TA colours to remind you that you’re part of something bigger. We’re calling on everyone to wear those jerseys with pride this season.  Let’s show the world what we’re made of!

Also, if you’re interested in getting involved, ACU is looking for research participants. Details are below, so if you’re keen, be sure to get in touch and seize the opportunity.

Sessions are all updated on the online timetable, so check it out and plan ahead. We’re keeping an eye on the EPA reports, hoping for the all-clear to get in the water Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday—fingers crossed!

That’s it for this week! Build Week 2 is all about consistency and seizing opportunities, no matter what the weather throws our way. Let’s get after it!

a word from the coach

The Mirror Test

Crew, the big days are closer than you think! The months of training, dedication, and sweat are all leading up to these key races. Now is the time to dig deep, stay committed, and make every session count.

Here's a quick countdown to the major events on our calendar:

Noosa – 13 days away
Melbourne 70.3 – 20 days away
Race 1 Elwood – 34 days away
Ironman & 70.3 Busso – 41 days away

These races are the moments we’ve been training for.  The finish lines waiting for your hard work, commitment, and grit. Whether it’s nailing that long ride, perfecting your swim, or finding speed on the track, now is the time to go all in. Every session matters. Every effort counts.

And here’s something important to remember: it’s not about comparing yourself to who’s there or who’s not.  It’s about being accountable to yourself. Sure, some athletes might miss a session, but their absence isn’t what should drive you. What matters is how you show up. What are you doing to make sure you're ready when it’s time to stand on the start line? Are you putting in enough effort to walk into race day knowing you’ve done everything you can?

Ask yourself: what about all the competitors who are doing more? What about the athlete out there who’s giving everything, quietly, while no one’s watching? And most importantly, if you’re competing against yourself, are you truly giving your best, or are you cutting corners in your training?

It's something I like to call The Mirror Test: at the end of each training day, when you look in the mirror, can you honestly say that you gave it your all?

Race day doesn’t wait for anyone, and the rewards will only reflect what you’ve put in. So, let’s leave the excuses behind, focus on our own journey, and keep pushing forward.

Kona Qualifier - Mario

Mario's Road to Kona

A Journey of Grit, Laughter, and a Lightning-Fast Run

Mario's triathlon journey is nothing short of inspiring, and if you’ve ever trained alongside him, you’ll know it’s rooted in a whole lot of grit, persistence, and determination. As a long-time and much-loved member of the Tri-Alliance family, Mario has steadily worked his way up through the ranks, ticking off major triathlon milestones along the way. One of his standout moments was qualifying for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, a life-goal for many triathletes, and one Mario has worked tirelessly to achieve.

His journey to Kona started with his performance at the Busselton Ironman, where he secured his qualification in December 2022. This was no small feat.  It came after years of disciplined training, advice from his coach, and solid racing, including great performances at Ironman Cairns and Port Macquarie. But if we’re being honest, his secret weapon is his run - and it’s no joke. Mario’s got a shuffle that fools you into thinking he’s cruising, but make no mistake, he’s fast - surprisingly so. Just ask anyone who’s tried to keep up when he goes flying past on the final leg of a race!

Before securing his Kona spot, Mario achieved a personal goal that many can only dream of: a sub-3-hour marathon. That achievement took his running to a whole new level, sharpening his ability to chase down anyone in front of him. It’s this killer combination of focus and speed that makes Mario so dangerous on race day. No matter how far behind he might be at the start of the run, you can never count him out. He’s notorious for pulling off epic come-from-behind victories (where you think he’s out of contention, and suddenly, boom, there he is, passing you like it’s just another training day).

But don’t let all that determination fool you.  Mario’s always ready for a laugh, and he’s the first to lend a hand when others need support. He’s the kind of guy who can crush a time trial and then stick around to cheer on his teammates or crack a joke during a long ride when the group needs a boost. That’s the beauty of Mario; not only is he fiercely committed to his own goals, but he’s a genuine team player. He brings a positive energy that uplifts everyone around him, making him the backbone of many sessions.

As he heads off to race in Kona this weekend, we can all take a moment to appreciate the journey that’s brought him here.  A journey filled with hard work, laughs, and a whole lot of heart. Let’s rally behind him as he takes on one of the toughest triathlon races in the world, knowing that no matter the outcome, Mario has already made his mark.

Good luck, mate!  You’ve earned every second of this. We're all behind you, cheering loud from here. And remember, whatever happens, the post-race celebration is going to be legendary!

Father-Daughter Duo at the World Triathlon Age-Group Championships

This past weekend, two of our squad members, Paul and Tegan, qualified for the 2024 World Triathlon Age-Group Championships in Torremolinos, southern Spain. While it’s always inspiring to see a father-daughter duo reaching such an elite level, it was unfortunate that Tegan had to miss the race due to illness. We know she’ll bounce back stronger and be ready for her next challenge!

As for Paul, he put in a stellar performance, finishing 36th overall with a time of 2:33:53. His splits were impressive, clocking 27:50 in the swim, 1:11:32 on the bike, and 47:55 for the run. Even more notably, Paul was the 2nd Australian across the line in his age group, a huge accomplishment on the world stage.

Congratulations to Paul for a fantastic race, and we’re sending our best to Tegan as she recovers. We can’t wait to see what’s next for both of them!

Jerseys Are Here!!!

TA family, it's time to wear your blue and yellow with pride! Our jerseys and tri suits have finally landed, and we couldn’t be more excited to see everyone decked out in our iconic gear. There’s something powerful about seeing our squad come together in full force, knowing that every athlete wearing the team colours is part of something bigger - a community that pushes, supports, and celebrates together.

This is more than just apparel - it’s a symbol of everything we stand for. When you put on that jersey or tri suit, you're not just showing up for yourself; you’re standing shoulder-to-shoulder with teammates who share your passion, commitment, and drive. We’re not just athletes; we’re a team. So, let’s suit up and show our colours proudly!

We know many of you have been waiting for this gear, and now it’s finally here! Let’s make sure every one of us is ready to represent Tri-Alliance as we head into race season. Whether you’re training, racing, or just gathering with the squad, let’s make our presence known. Wear the blue and yellow, feel the pride, and let’s show everyone what we’re made of!
