~ 21st August 2023 ~

Welcome back to our regular Monday morning read. It's Build Week 2, and the journey is in full swing. Let's be sure to keep consistent by lacing up those shoes, hoping on those bikes, and diving into the pool with renewed vigour as we continue to build the foundations. Your commitment now is your key to future success!

We're in the final planning stages and nearing the last opportunity for everyone to jump on board for our Pre-Season camp. The message is clear: if you want to be race-ready, you've got to put in the effort to be ready to race! It's that simple. We're urging all athletes to embrace the training spike at our Pre-Season camp, catapulting themselves into the upcoming racing season with purpose. Secure your spot now to seize this amazing opportunity for fine-tuning, skill enhancement, and race-specific preparation. Don't miss out on this pivotal step.

A wave of luck is heading across the seas as we cheer on Jimmy and Dicko in the Ironman 70.3 World Champs in Finland next weekend. It's a monumental achievement, and we're immensely proud of their qualification. Let's send them a virtual cheer by signing the e-card link below and wishing them all the best in their world-class challenge.

Big congrats to Jen for her podium success over the weekend. Racing abroad and bringing home some silverware is the perfect souvenir. It's a testament to your dedication and never-give-up attitude, and we're thrilled to celebrate your success with you.

As our squad sessions get busier, it's time to talk pool etiquette. We've noticed a few waves (pun intended) of enthusiasm lately, but also a splash of confusion when it comes to navigating the lanes. Fear not, we've got an article this week to make sure we're all swimming harmoniously, ensuring everyone enjoys their time in the water.

Exciting news is on the horizon as we shift our wind trainer session to real life (IRL). Remember those pre-pandemic days when we gathered at MSAC on Tuesday nights? Well, we're bringing back that highly popular and incredibly beneficial session. Training in person and in the heat/humidity brings a whole new dimension to your preparation. Check out the article below for all the benefits and reasons to join us for this session.

The countdown is on for the 2XU Triathlon Series entries! Don't forget to mark September 1st on your calendar, the day when our exclusive 20% discounted rate becomes available. This offer is for all Annual Members and is a chance to secure your spot in some fantastic races at a significant discount.

Guess what? The TriShop has just unveiled new running tops that are ready to uplift your style and performance. It's been a long time coming, and the wait was worth it. Female and male styles are available in singlet, tee, and long sleeve options. Treat yourself to some fresh gear that matches your enthusiasm for the sport!

This weekend's long ride offers dual starting points at the same time. Long-course advanced athletes, join Head Coach Ollie at 6:30am from Kew, riding to Kinglake. All other athletes, meet Coach Gaz at Attenborough Park for a 6:30am roll out towards Arthurs Seat. An uncoached option also leaves at 7am from Attenborough Park, headed to Mornington. The choice is yours. But as Gaz said, “Sometimes, for one reason or another you CAN’T ride (or train)! Could be weather, illness, injury, other commitments etc…. So, when you CAN ride or train, you do!”

As the week unfolds, keep your focus sharp and your determination strong. Remember, your journey is our priority, and we're here to support you every step of the way. Feel free to reach out with feedback or questions. Your input helps us improve, and together we'll continue to enhance your training journey.

IRONMAN 70.3 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

All the best to Dicko & Jimmy!

With its green, pristine natural surroundings, and unique position as the northernmost destination on the IRONMAN 70.3 circuit, Lahti will provide Chris Dickson (Dicko) and James Tyler (Jimmy) with a one-of-a-kind experience to race through Finnish nature. And, as one of the flattest countries in Europe, they can expect a smooth and speedy racecourse as they vie for a Championship race to remember.

Men's Race Day: Sunday, August 27, 2023

We're well aware of the incredible dedication these two individuals pour into their race preparation, and this endeavour is no exception. It's also no secret that they both have a fondness for capturing moments with a selfie or two – and let's be honest, going shirtless only enhances the appeal! Our sincere hope is that their rigorous training (and renovating cross-training) translates into a remarkable performance on race day. May their swimming be strong, cycling be relentless, and running be swift. And above all else, our greatest hope is for them to relish a fantastic day on the racecourse, one that culminates in a treasure trove of enduring memories.

You can track Dicko and Jimmy via the IRONMAN Athlete Tracker App next weekend.

And in the meantime, please take a moment to write them a well wish on the e-cards below. These will be delivered on next Saturday afternoon so they can read your messages right before they race!

POOL SWIMMING ETIQUETTE

Making Waves the Right Way!

You know what they say – "Good vibes start with good vibes." And that includes in the pool! We're all about smashing personal bests, having a laugh, and building an awesome community. But let's talk about something as important as nailing that perfect stroke – Pool Etiquette!

We've noticed a few waves (pun intended) of enthusiasm lately, but also a splash of confusion when it comes to navigating the lanes. Fear not, we're here to make sure every lap you take is a lap of glory!

Lane Love

Think of the swim lanes like our own little aquatic highways. It's all about sharing the road, or in this case, the water. If you're taking it easy during the set, be mindful of others sharing the lane. It's a lot like driving – except without the road rage.

The Chat & Chill Zone

Sure, catching up is awesome, but let's keep the long chats for post-swim coffee. During the session, let's aim for focused laps. Remember, breath control comes easier when you're not debating the latest gossip.

Clockwise Magic

Just like a triathlon course, we keep things moving clockwise. Follow the leader, and if you're joining a bit late, ask for a quick update on where we're at and jump in at an appropriate break.

Buffer Zone

Nobody likes a flipper in the face! Give your fellow swimmers some space. When starting a lap, make sure you take off 5 seconds behind the person in front of you. This helps prevent any accidental tap-dancing mid-stroke.

The Wallflower Rest

Hey, we all need a breather, right? When taking a quick rest at the wall, scoot over to the corner to leave the wall as open as 7-Eleven. It keeps the lane flowing and prevents any unintentional synchronized swimming.

Overtaking Act (Feet Tapping)

If you're channelling your inner fish and overtaking a swimmer in front, give their toes a friendly tap to let them know you're coming through. It's like a polite "G'day, mind if I sneak past?" gesture. And remember, when you're the one being overtaken, a quick pause at the wall lets the overtaker zip by without any fin-flapping fuss.

Blocking Bypass

We get it – sometimes you just hit the pool with your mind in the clouds. But here's a nifty trick to dodge the blocking bullet. If you're leading the pack and spot a speedy swimmer catching up, be a true mate of the lane – pause at the wall and swiftly move aside. This simple move puts the brakes on blocking and eliminates the need for any toe-touching drama. It's like a triathlon dance of courtesy!

Now, this is just a sneak peek of our Pool Etiquette Bible. You might be thinking, "Hey, do I really need to know all this?" Our answer? Absolutely! Not only does it make everyone's swim experience smoother than a dolphin's glide, but it also shows respect for your fellow squad members.

Wind Trainer Sessions Return to MSAC!

We're excited to announce a shift that we believe will greatly benefit your training experience. Starting from Tuesday August 29th, our wind trainer sessions will return to the familiar setting of MSAC. We are convinced that the move will offer numerous advantages that align with your training needs.

Session Details:

* Date: Every Tuesday from August 29th

* Time: Arrive and set up from 6:00 PM, session starts promptly at 6:15 PM

* Location: MSAC, Indoor Pool Deck, Level 1

Key Benefits of Face-to-Face Wind Trainer Sessions at MSAC:

  1. Immediate Feedback and Corrective Coaching: Face-to-face sessions provide the advantage of real-time feedback from coaches and fellow athletes. Observing your form, posture, and technique in person allows for instant corrections, ensuring you make the most out of each session and minimise the risk of developing incorrect habits.
  2. Enhanced Motivation and Accountability: Training in a group setting fosters a strong sense of camaraderie and shared goals. The encouragement from peers, combined with the friendly competition, can significantly boost your motivation. Knowing that others are training alongside you can create a positive form of peer pressure that pushes you to give your best effort.
  3. Interactive Learning: Face-to-face sessions enable you to observe and learn from the training methods and strategies of more experienced athletes in the group. You can ask questions, exchange tips, and engage in discussions that contribute to your overall understanding of triathlon training.
  4. Improved Communication: While online platforms offer communication tools, there's nothing quite like face-to-face communication. In-person sessions allow for spontaneous conversations, clarifications, and direct communication with coaches, which can lead to clearer instructions and a better understanding of the training objectives.
  5. Intense Training Environment: Training in the heat and humidity of the indoor pool deck at MSAC elevates your heart rate, leading to improved cardiovascular endurance, better oxygen utilization, increased blood volume, and enhanced thermoregulation. These adaptations result in greater aerobic capacity, efficient oxygen transport, and improved heat tolerance.
  6. Mind Over Matter: Participating in sessions on the pool deck exposes you to elements such as heat and humidity, which are uncomfortable. The mental resilience cultivated through challenging conditions prepares you for race-day discomfort and fosters a well-rounded performance edge.

Session Logistics:

* Please bring your own wind trainers. If needed, you can hire one from the TA office for $10 (card or exact cash). This option will be available from 6pm – 6.10pm

* Obviously bring your bikes, a couple of towels and at least 2 water bottles.  You may be surprised how much you sweat!

* As it's a recovery week, we'll have one group training together on the first date. In subsequent sessions, we'll split into long course and short course groups.

While online wind trainer sessions have their advantages, face-to-face sessions offer a unique blend of immediate feedback, motivation, interaction, and real-world experience that are crucial for holistic triathlon training. We believe that transitioning back to our MSAC sessions will provide you with a more comprehensive and effective training experience that aligns with your aspirations and goals.
