IRONMAN GEELONG 70.3 DELIVERED THE GOODS!

im-geelong-70-crew

You could not have wished for better racing conditions, than those that were dished out at Geelong Ironman 70.3 on Sunday.  Clear waters, still air, sunshine and plenty of cheers greeted all athletes that took on the course.  We had 12 individuals and 4 teams competing and equally as many supporters who made their way down to G-town to show their love for the yellow and blue!  Read our weekend highlights for all the details of these amazing athletes, but we had some stand out performances that simply must be mentioned: JP snuck in under the elusive 5hr mark!, Carly had an overall 38min PB!, Raph went sub 1:30 for his half marathon!, Andy & Clarky smashed the bike course in 2:33!, Eddy & Budgie swam like sharks in 30min, we had 6 first-timers, 4 top 10  finishes and last but not least, our next 70.3 World Championship qualifier and off to South Africa – Trea!!!!  Holy Moly what a day!!!

Also in this edition, read Eddy’s race recap (some important learnings in this one!), someone has a special birthday worth celebrating, great specials from the team at Giant South Yarra (do not miss out on these bargains!), get yourself ready to race at Portarlington, learn your training zones, the Weekend Sessions and much more.  You know the drill; grab that coffee and read on!

#AdventuresOfSharkAndSteph

Our very own Ed-bassador took on just his 2nd half Ironman distance race this weekend, and although you wouldn't be able to tell from all the smiles and his fantastic result, not everything went to plan.  We talk about controlling the controllables - have a read to see if Eddy did this and how he overcame adversity to get the job done.  Awesome effort, Champ!

HEART RATE TRAINING

Are you in the Zone?
We've been talking about this a lot at sessions recently, but do you really know what zone you are in and why?

Training Zones in your program are the most important part in improving athlete performance. Each training zone represents a training load that will induce specific training adaptations in the body. In order for an athlete to improve his/her performance – these zones must be adhered to wherever possible. Changes in training zones on your program represent the need to improve and adapt to new and higher level of performance.Training zones are very unique and vary with each individual. Age can be very general guide to ranges although the common mistake made is that the higher the heart rate the better the training – this is not the case, especially with endurance athletes. Hit the link to see an outline of each training zone, the training load, and why it is used to improve your performance, as well as a detailed description of each zone.

Destination Race

Have you entered Race #5 on the 18th March?  We love this race weekend on our calendar – such great location, different course (#notbeachroad) and the vibe is awesome.  If you haven’t been down, you simply must make this part of your schedule!   We usually make a weekend of it, heading down Friday and coming home either Sunday night or Monday morning and find it easier to book a house a share with our crazy crew.  If you're looking for someone to bunk with, need a lift down or simply want some advice, shoot us an email and we'll put you in contact with others in a similar situation.

HAPPY 18TH BIRTHDAY, MONTY!

18 And Totally Legal!

Now we don’t usually do this, but we felt as though we could not let this momentous occasion pass without highlighting it in some way.  The ‘not-so-young-anymore’, Monty Cooper this week celebrates his 18th birthday.  Monty started training with Tri Alliance way back in 2006, when he was just 6 years old and has been a steady and determined athlete ever since.  Training alongside Coaches Ollie and Greg and his mum, Juliet, from an early age, Monty has always wanted to be a triathlete and has become an integral part of our squad.  He has worked his way through the ranks, and last year took on the Olympic Distance for the first time at the Noosa Multisports Festival and is now part of the Triathlon Victoria Development Program.  We are always super proud of this young man and love watching him develop and following his journey.  Happiest of birthday to you Monty!  May all your wishes come true, for this year and beyond.

MSAC PARKING UPDATE

MSAC Main Entrance
Still A Bit Confused?

As of January 1, 2018, Parks Victoria amended the pricing structure of parking at MSAC and surrounding Lakeside Stadium areas in Albert Park. This will impact athletes who regularly train at MSAC and it is advised that you are fully aware of new restrictions and pricing structures in place.

To break it down, your first hour of parking is free, followed by a charge of $5.20 per hour thereafter between 6am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. However, after 5pm you will be charged a once-off fee of $5.20, no matter the length of your stay. There are also license plate recognition gates you must pass through to enter, which will time your parking from entry to exit, allowing you to pay upon exit of the carpark.

Where to find Free parking???
The best is found at morning sessions where the parking on Lakeside Drive and the Lakeside carpark near the VIS are all free until 8am.  If anything changes on this we will let you know.  Evenings there is parking on Canterbury and Kerferd Roads and with some searching on Google maps heaps of 2hr parking in all of the side streets within that precinct including Young street, Mills Street, Herbert Street, Herbert place, and the list goes on and on.
