How good does it feel to be back to a full timetable this week….yay!  It was great getting the gang back to MSAC last Monday night and again on Wednesday morning.  And we hear the Friday morning crew are gearing themselves up for a long-awaited return!  Time for all athletes to get back into the swing of squad and start feeling that water again.  Three sessions each week, open to all athletes with a focus on consolidating good technique before building strength to hold your good form over time.  Morning swims will be 6am-7am for the month of July.  No better time to get on it.

And you know what else it’s a good time for…..a time trial!  Yup, let’s get some valuable data for your training profiles.  You should have all completed your second FTP this week and will be doing a run TT next Thursday night.  Take note, that this session is not held at The Tan.  It is done at Albert Park Lake from 6pm or at Essendon with Coach Greg.

Little update on riding – all rides at the moment are leaving from Elwood.  You should check your programs and ride the appropriately programed distance.  Coaches will be grouping like athletes and suggesting routes.  The hills through Mt Eliza, Mornington and beyond will be utilized for strength work for the time being.  With the Dandenongs mostly out of action we will be looking to move our long rides to the northern region, to take advantage of our proven training grounds of Wildwood and Kinglake.  So, make the most of the building some strength now to be ready for bigger hills to come!

If you’ve been looking at your programs and wondering what’s happening with the build, there’s a quick explanation from Ollie below.  He talks through the why, the periodization and where you are all at.  If still unsure, hit the link to send him an email to clarify.

And lastly, some of you may have seen this recently, but if you haven’t you should check out the IM Race Report from James Tyler.  It’s always great to hear how an athlete felt about their race and how their day unfolded, in their own words.  Congrats again Jimmy on Ironman #10 and for giving us an insight into your race experience.

Programs

Due to the most recent lockdown, the program cycles (and most importantly the technique block) were impacted.  As a result of only getting back to a full timetable this week, there was and will be some adjustments to the program going forward.  Sessions have been designed to help athletes coming out of lockdown, and having missed the beginning of the June build, are aimed at merging into the current time of year.  Therefore, we are adding back a few weeks of technique that was lost from face-to-face coaching in both the pool and on the run, so that we can best prepare you for the continuation of the periodised program.

These adjustments also include recovery cycles, which will take effect immediately.  It will be recovery week next week.  We have found by modifying the recovery weeks accordingly it works more effectively with scheduled upcoming races for the 21/22 season.

This should explain why sessions may have seemed out of alignment as we would have expected for this first week but will now amalgamate for the next cycle.

IM Cairns - How the Day Unfolded

On June 6th, despite the odds and a looming Victorian lockdown, I was finally able to complete my 10th Ironman race up in tropical Cairns. And what a fantastic experience it was too.It was a very tough day with heat and fairly nasty winds from early in the morning, so we had to fight hard just to get to the start of the run leg – but this also made it all the more satisfying to finish, especially with successes and PB’s along the way. As much as I was expecting to be closer to the 10hr mark rather than just sneaking into the high 10’s, you can’t pick conditions and you have to adapt, and race what you’re dealt on the day.
