Making the YET Possible

hill-repeats-tha-tan

We finished our first hills ride and another recovery week done. Did you enjoy the change of scenery? If hills aren't your friend, it's time to start making them your friend!! Winter training is the most critical time to focus on strength gains. Our Tan runs on Thursday nights and Saturday rides are not to be missed! But we're not just talking about hills here; we're also talking about focusing on your swim technique too when there's no pressure from a race. There are no races scheduled for the foreseeable future, so there are no excuses to ignore your weakness right now!

Let's go, another week of power! Make the most of this opportunity. These sessions will help with both injury prevention and make you stronger for the tri-season.

If you haven't already, come join us this week for our last two sessions with Jordan. Meet at 6am at MSAC (note the two different venues). Don't forget that Jordan from Lakeside Sports Med is also offering a dedicated 6-week strength programme for athletes who want to continue this extra training component. Continue reading for details.

We hope you enjoyed hearing how much fun our athletes had at camp (we're not sorry!). But hold on, there's more! Check out our Winter Camp Wrap and our awesome video from coach Elle, our marketing guru! Now that we've all recovered from camp, it's time to plan your next adventure! In that vein, bookings for Thailand Camp will be closing soon! If you intend to attend, please notify the coaches NOW.

We have a busy week ahead of us with a lot of changes, so read through our newsletter to make sure you don't miss anything or end up in the wrong place!

 Training updates for this week:

  • Monday - gym session (MSAC Group Fitness Room).
  • Wednesday - gym session (MSAC Athlete Performance Centre).
  • (note different venues)
  • Tuesday morning run is back from 6am - 7am with Coach Ollie & Elle.
  • Tuesday – wind trainer session online 6pm for all athletes.
  • Thursday - HOT LAPS are back!
  • Friday – swims return to normal.
  • Saturday - only 1 coached ride option (Eltham).

We had to say goodbye to our favourite hippie triathlete (I'm not crying, you are 😭). Samuel has written us a little farewell message for us as he heads off to Canada for good... but we have a feeling he will be back again, very soon.
Lastly, our results from our IRONMAN & 70.3 Cairns crew! They all did well and did it with HUGE smiles on their faces. Please don't brag too much about the warm weather and sunshine when you return; we won't be able to handle it!

That's it from us.. See you at your next session!

Farewell from our Favourite Canadian Hippie Triathlete – Samuel

I’ll start by getting the obvious out of the way: Yes, I’m ready for my race! I’m at the absolute top of my game! I’ve never been fitter in my life, and I’ve been doing age-group sports all my childhood and adult life. I’m gonna crush it, and I’m gonna crush my competition, which are my mates from home. I’ve put so much time and effort into training this year, and I’ve gained so much triathlon experience. I must credit all of the TA coaches for massive improvements to my running technique and the management of high-volume training, including injury management. I can’t thank my training partners enough for the added motivation and all-round good times! Also, Melbourne is probably one of the best places in the world where a triathlete can train, and live!

Anglesea Winter Tri-Camp

Anglesea Wrap Up

That’s a wrap on Anglesea Camp 2023! What an absolute blast we had, the weather was perfect, the location was great, and had an amazing group of athletes and coaches. We spent four days riding, swimming, and running in beautiful Anglesea, which provided us with numerous excellent training opportunities. We stayed at the YMCA in Anglesea, which offered the perfect facility for our training, recovery, food, and seminars. We even managed to squeeze in an open water swim down in Torquay (with wetsuits, of course!) which provided our athletes with valuable experience swimming in surf conditions.

Our rides were incredible, as we got to experience cycling along the Great Ocean Road, many of the athletes road to Lorne and some even to Apollo Bay. One of the great things about riding along the Great Ocean Road is the hills and the descents, which everyone loved (this was a good change up from Beach Road). As for our runs, we were fortunate to be based near some incredible trail runs through the bush and along the water at Anglesea.

Apart from training, we had a number of seminars, which were a great addition to our camp as we were there to learn as well as train! We had nutrition and mindset seminars, and Jordan from Lakeside Sports Medicine popped in for a visit to take us through some stretching and talked about the importance of strength and conditioning. Our final session was hosted by Bo, who helped the athletes learn stretching and massage techniques that would help them recover after camp. Overall, it was an amazing experience.

Camp really made the YET possible for those who attended. We hope to see everyone again next year!

Next Destination is...

Dandenongs Winter Ride

Kinglake!

The first week of hill rides went well! It may have felt difficult, but this is just the beginning! Remember that riding in a low gear helps you build strength and endurance. So, enjoy the grind and embrace the opportunity to ride in new places. Our next destination is...
Build Week #1 - Dandenongs
Build Week #2 - Kinglake
Recovery Week - Mordialloc

All rides begin at a different location over the 3 weeks and have a starting point for long-course and short-course programs. This week we will only have one coached ride which will start at 7am at Eltham. The Recovery Week ride next week will be a combined group and will leave at 7am.  Make sure you check the timetable to find exact details each week of where to meet and where to ride.

Strength Session with Jordan

More Strength with Joran

As we make our way through the off-season, we encourage you to remember to shift your focus and prioritize an aspect of training that is often overlooked: building strength. While endurance and cardiovascular fitness are crucial for triathlon success, developing strength during this period can significantly enhance your speed and overall performance in the upcoming race season. Strength training not only helps to prevent injuries by strengthening muscles and connective tissues, but it also improves power output, efficiency, and resilience during demanding race conditions. By incorporating targeted exercises that target key muscle groups used in swimming, cycling, and running, we can lay a solid foundation for success. Let's seize the opportunity below from Jordan (Lakeside Sports Medicine Centre) to strengthen our bodies and take our triathlon game to the next level!

When: Wednesday Nights 7pm-7:45pm, starting 28th June for 6 weeks

Where: MSAC Performance Centre

*Bonus: at-home independent strength session emailed to participants on Thursday each week.

winter-cycling-gear

“There’s no such thing as bad weather – just bad clothing choices.”

When you’re riding on a cold, wet and windy day, you want to be as warm and as comfortable as you can. We have a guide for those new to Winter riding, to help you avoid learning from a very cold and miserable experience of your own!

The guide talks about a lot of gear and you can wear some or (like me) often all of it at once. The key is LAYERS. Even on the coldest day, you will heat up as you grind up the hills and then become freezing cold as the wind slices through you on the descents or you hit a gully where it appears all the cold air was hiding and waiting to slap you off your bike!
