~ 19th August 2024 ~

It’s Build Week 2, and you know what that means—time to carry on the momentum from Week 1 and push through to get those maximum gains! This is where the real work happens, so keep that routine tight and let’s smash through this week.

Now, let’s talk consistency. We’ve been banging on about it for a while, but it seems like some of you might need a little extra nudge. So, this week, we’ve included a cheeky poem. It’s got rhythm, it’s got rhyme, and it’s got a whole lot of truth!

We also want to share a fabulous reflection from James, who attended the Thailand training camp. He shares his perspective and the benefits he's gained from it. It’s a great read and might just give you that extra bit of inspiration to keep pushing through Build Week 2. Check it out below!

Heads up: This week, we’re moving our Thursday night run session from The Tan to Albert Park Lake. Why the switch? We’ll be conducting a time trial, which is crucial for tracking your progress and setting benchmarks for future training. Time trials are a great way to see how far you’ve come and to push yourself that little bit harder.

And don’t forget, as a Tri-Alliance annual member, you’re privileged to a pretty sweet discount in the 2XU Triathlon Series. This kicks in on August 30, so make sure you’re across all the details in the newsletter.

Lastly, be sure to check the timetable for this week’s sessions. Wind trainer is back at MSAC, and we’ve got two ride locations on Saturday and just one run location on Sunday.

Here’s to another week of hard work and progress.  Let’s keep the energy high and the attendance strong—this is where the magic happens, team!

CONSISTENCY IS KEY

The Cherry Picker's Lament

There once was a squad, all fit and keen,
But their training was more like a scattered dream.
They’d skip a session here, a session there,
Thinking, "I’ve got this, I swear!"

They’d cherry-pick workouts, the easy and fun,
Ignoring the tough ones, they’d simply shun.
“I’ll do my own thing, I know what’s best,”
But come race day, they’d fail the test.

Their coaches, wise with twenty years' skill,
Knew that cherry-picking won’t get you the thrill.
"You need the long runs, the hills, and the drills,
If you want to conquer those race day chills!"

So, here’s a reminder, in rhyme and jest,
Trust the program, it’s designed for success!
Stick with the plan, don’t stray or skip,
Or your race-day dreams might just slip.

Consistency’s key, the secret we share,
The path to your best, to rise and prepare.
So, lace up those shoes, and don’t ever hide,
Stick to the plan, and let your strengths shine wide!

Thai Camp - A Personal Perspective

Attending the recent Triathlon Training Camp (Thanyapura, Phuket Thailand) was nothing short of transformative for my training and performance.

Leading up to the camp, I struggled with my nutrition, often experiencing muscle cramping due to poor sodium intake. This issue was holding me back, and I knew something had to change.

During the camp, with the guidance and support of Head Coach Ollie, I finally got my nutrition dialled in, particularly my sodium intake. This adjustment made all the difference, allowing me to fully benefit from the intense training sessions without the setbacks I had previously experienced.

The results were immediate.  My FTP saw a 17% increase just after the camp, a gain that I could never have imagined before attending. This improvement was further confirmed on my first long ride post-camp, where I set a new personal best for an 80km solo recovery ride (non-drafting) beating my previous PB, which was set in a group ride (with drafting).  Achieving this on a recovery ride was a clear indicator of how much my fitness had progressed.

With just over 100 days to go until Busso 70.3, I genuinely believe that the experience at this camp has given me the equivalent of an additional 100 days of gains in just 9 days. While I’ve already seen substantial improvements in my riding, I’m excited to witness the gains in my running and swimming over the coming weeks.  The impact on my training and preparation for the race has been profound, and I feel more ready than ever to tackle the challenge ahead.

Reflecting on my triathlon training journey so far, this camp has been a major milestone. The knowledge I’ve gained, both in training and nutrition, has not only improved my performance but has also given me the confidence to push myself further. The camaraderie and support from everyone involved were invaluable, and I’m excited to continue building on these gains.

I can’t recommend highly enough the Thanyapura Triathlon Training Camp. Whether you’re looking to refine your skills, boost your performance, or just learn more about what your body needs to succeed, this camp delivers in every way.

RUNNING TIME TRIAL

TA Time Trial Albert Park Lake

You Can't Manage What You Don't Measure

Time trials are a key part of our training routine, helping us (and you!) see how much you’re improving over time. It’s not just about the time, though—conditions can vary each time we do a trial. What really matters is how you perform and recover, as these are great indicators of your progress.

Remember, these training phases are all about boosting your skills, strength, endurance, and technique so you can hit the start line ready to swim, bike, or run your personal best. It's awesome to shine during training, but the real goal is to bring that performance to race day!

For our run time trial there is a slight change to the session.

Thursday 22nd August
This session is run around the Albert Park Lake walking track (approx. 4.7kms), rain, hail or shine!  Meet outside the MSAC main entrance, ready to begin the warmup at 6pm.

Distances:
Long Course athletes – 10kms
Short Course athletes – 5kms
New/Beginner athletes 1-2kms
