Race 3 of the 2XU Triathlon Series at St Kilda unfolded under the spectre of uncertain weather, but athletes' fears were allayed as the event proceeded according to plan, delivering a day of spirited competition and remarkable performances.
Rainfall on Saturday afternoon had initially cast doubt on the viability of swimming, potentially turning the triathlon into a duathlon. However, the collective sigh of relief was audible as the EPA kept the yellow dot in place, so the event proceeded as scheduled. The backdrop of St Kilda, coupled with the added significance of being the Australian Sprint Championships, set the stage for a day of intense competition.
With a strong depth to all the fields, Tri-Alliance drew 63 athletes racing across various distances, ranging from TriKids to Olympic distance. The TA tent, a lively hub of activity, resonated with smiles, laughter, and friendship, once again lifting the vibes and morale of the entire squad.
The day’s results were a fantastic testament to the squad, with Tri-Alliance securing 2 first-place finishes, 2 second-place finishes, and 3 third-place finishes. The depth of talent was evident, as 29 athletes claimed top-10 positions across the various events.
The culture within Tri-Alliance continues to thrive, with the first race of 2024 building on the high standards set in 2023. Tri-Alliance athletes showcased their dedication and determination, giving their all across the venue and embodying the squad's commitment to excellence.
In the Fun distance race, out of 10 starters, we had: • 2 athletes going sub 35mins for the overall finish time • A further 3 athletes posting 35min times for the overall finish time • 1 athlete swam under 3mins for the 200m • 2 athletes broke the 17mins for the 8km ride • 3 road runners broke the 10min mark for the 2km run Fastest swim, Bradley 2:54 Fastest bike, Tam 16:38 Fastest run, John 9:05
Out of 34 starters for a slightly longer than usual Sprint distance, we had: • 2 athletes breaking the 1hr 20min barrier for the overall finish time • 1 athlete going sub 1:35 for overall finish time • 2 athletes swam under 12mins for the 750m • A further 6 athletes swam under 13mins • 1 athlete broke the 40min barrier for the 26.7km ride • A further 2 athletes went sub 45mins • a formidable 9 cyclists achieved sub-50-minute times • 2 road runners broke the 20min mark for the 5km run • A further 3 were just outside this, going sub 21mins • Overall, 12 athletes boasted sub-25-minute run times

In the Olympic distance race, out of 14 starters, we had: • 1 athlete breaking the 2hr 10min barrier for the overall finish time • 1 athlete breaking the 2hr 20min barrier for the overall finish time • 1 athlete going sub 2hr 30min for overall finish time • 1 athlete swam under 24mins for the 1.5kms • A further 2 athletes swam under 25mins for 1.5kms • 1 athlete broke the 1hr barrier for the 40km ride • A further 2 athletes went sub 1hr 5min • a formidable 5 cyclists achieved sub-1hr 10min times • 2 road runners broke the 45min mark for the 10km run • A further 2 went sub 50min
