WHAT A BIG WEEKEND!

try-the-tri-2019

What. A. Weekend.

We don’t know if we’re exhausted or incredibly inspired and motivated but the mix of adrenaline and endorphins has left us reeling in good vibes!

The weekend started off with sunshine, blue skies and smiles as our first Try the Tri of the 2019/20 season kicked off. This lot is one to watch with their enthusiasm to jump in the chilly bay far surpassing that of Coach Gaz...oh wait, that’s not hard! Jokes aside, you’ll start to see TTT #1 at your sessions as they join us on Tuesdays for running and wind trainer and at Elwood for our Thursday and Saturday sessions, so please share your friendly smile with one or many as they are enveloped in our TA family.

Then the time came...the moment that Trent and Sammy had been preparing themselves for longer than we can possibly imagine, it was time for KONA! The 2019 Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii is a race like no other and both Trent and Sammy did themselves proud battling the elements with a finishing time of 9:48:10 for Trent and 11:42:48 for Sammy. Congratulations to you both, we know just how many people within TA and the broader tri community were glued to their phones and computer screens all day tracking you and cheering from afar, not to mention the on the ground support from family and friends! We are all super proud and hope that you are enjoying some island time now with plenty of well-deserved rest and celebration! Congratulations!

Just as Trent and Sammy were coming out of the swim in Kona, back home thousands took to the pavement for the Melbourne Marathon. A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS goes to the one and only Super Mario for smashing out a sub-3 hour marathon! Mario has worked away at his goal with Head Coach Ollie, he followed the program and with determination and consistency, he did it! Boom. Special congrats also go to the marathon first timers, and shout out to those who completed the half marathon and 10km events - including a few incredible PBs! Well done all!

Meanwhile, across the river in Richmond, Lindsey Berne came away with the win in her age group at the 2019 Duathlon State Championships! Congratulations, we look forward to seeing you back at training as you prepare for the 2XU Triathlon Series this season!

And the final cheering duty of the day on Sunday was for Neda taking on the Chicago Marathon. Neda 'the-quiet-achiever' Jamshidi, who has worked away with Head Coach Ollie (and training buddies Mario and Enrique) proved on Sunday that patience in following the program works with a 23 minute PB, wow! Congratulations Neda!

This week, we celebrate Lakeside Sports Medicine moving into their spiffy new rooms at MSAC, remind everyone it’s time to renew our Elwood Life Saving Club memberships (your golden ticket to hot showers and of course supporting the awesome work that ELSC do), another stellar clinic on offer from Weekesy and training location updates...read on!

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.

Tri-Alliance-Athletes-in-Kona
Congratulations Sammy & Trent!

Trent ‘the gazelle’ Harlow and ‘all smiles’ Sammy took on all the elements of the beast that is Kona, the Ironman World Championship, on the weekend. Now they are in recovery mode, they have had a chance to reflect on their race experience.

What a Successful Day!
Melbourne put on a beautiful morning for the marathon on Sunday, with TA athletes taking on the marathon, half marathon and 10km. There were many firsts, plenty of PBs and lots of smiles, follow the link below for athlete race reports and reflections.

The one, the only, Suuuuuper Mario smashed his goal of a sub 3-hour marathon on Sunday and has written a very special reflection on his feat, just for you!
CHICAGO MARATHON

Congratulations Neda

Another runner who kept her race goal on the down low, also went out and smashed it on the weekend...in Chicago!

"What a massive day and a big year of training, 23 minute PB and potential Boston qualifier. THANK YOU Ollie Allan for believing in me and all my wonderful friends for running with me, you know who you are. Especially my support crew Nicole Luzza who travelled to Chicago to remind me of my potential (and yank my compression socks off quick smart at 35km) "

VIC DUATHLON SERIES

Congratulations Lindsey!

The tri season is just around the corner and there’s no better way to get in race mode than participating in a duathlon. Lindsey Berne knows this well, racing in the 2019 Duathlon State Championship on the weekend.
"Winners are grinners. Shiny medal but easy when you’re the only one in your age group ??"

Pre-Season Swim Tips

This 90-minute clinic is perfect for you if this sounds familiar:

  • You’d love to take part in triathlon but the swim leg is putting you off
  • You feel like you’re fighting the water
  • You’re out of breath after just 30m in the pool and have to rest frequently
  • When you swim you imagine your legs and feet dragging low behind you
  • You don’t look forward to swim sessions at all
  • Swimming is simply a struggle and you’re at a loss as to how to improve
  • The thought of swimming alone makes you uncomfortable
  • You’d like to graduate to open water swimming but don’t know where to start

Sunday 20th October
12pm - 1:30pm
MSAC

You do not need to bring sports watches, and there will not be extended periods of swimming so fitness is not an issue!

ELWOOD LIFE SAVING CLUB

It's Time To Sign
We have had a great partnership with Elwood Life Saving Club for many many years and we truly believe in supporting the amazing work they do.  That's why we're encouraging all our members to get behind the club and sign up as a member for the 2019/20 season.  Not only will this support our community, it will also provide you with the opportunity to be eligible for a foreshore parking pass (will save you loads in parking fees...or fines when you get done for forgetting!).

Membership fees for the 2019/20 season will remain the same.  ELSC are also offering a number of training opportunities for their members.  So make sure you get on board and support the local community.

We also ask that all members aged 18 and over ensure that you have a current Working with Children Check, which has Elwood LSC and Life Saving Victoria listed as organisations.  We will not be able to process your renewals without this due to changes that occurred under the Child Protection legislation last year.

Welcome New Athletes

It's that time of year again, when we start seeing lots of new athletes decide to try their hand at our sport and eagerly start turning up to Elwood Beach in hopes of learning all things triathlon to "get them through" their very first race!  Well, this weekend was no different....well, actually it was a little, as we had RECORD numbers turn out for our first Try the Tri program of the year.  We have over 60 participants registered and majority were keen to get themselves in the water ASAP.  Thank you so much to those athletes who wandered down, hung around and generally helped out over the weekend.  It was appreciated not only by the coaches, but the nervous new athletes as well.  If you are around any of these sessions over the coming weeks and notice anyone looking a little lost, please feel free to lend a hand, answer a question or two or just generally be 'available' as friendly face.
