What a Camp!

anglesea-winter-riding

It’s fun to stay at the TRI-MCA!  Tri-Alliance took over Anglesea and smashed out an incredible 4-day camp along The Great Ocean Road this weekend.  There were hills and sunshine, surf and trails, stretching and psychology workshops and even a campfire!  What a weekend!!!!

No doubt you have seen the shares on the socials and have no fear, we’ll be bombarding you with more!  Sharing our videos and camp reviews with you next week once we are all back and recovered, and getting you excited to get involved in the next camps we have on the agenda.  Speaking of which, bookings for Thailand Camp are closing very soon!  Please let the coaches ASAP know if you are thinking about attending.

All we can say for now is a HUGE well done for everyone who attended Winter training camp. It was a definite training spike in their campaign and will kick-start them for the winter training ahead.  To all camp athletes, ensure you take the active recovery this week.  The gains are made when you push boundaries and then give your body time to recover.  Be smart and you will feel it in the weeks to come.

Did someone say hills?  Anyone else excited for a change of scenery? We will continue our endurance-based training with a focus on technique throughout June. We began the month with Time Trials and will continue them during the following months. Also, this month we will be heading to the hills! Details below on starting points - note: SC & LC will be starting at different points and times.

Adding strength to your workouts!
You may have noticed that your programme has a few extra sessions in there.  Strength sessions to help with injury prevention as well as performance. We will all have a chance to get our strength going with session in the MSAC Athlete Performance Centre replacing swim sessions this week and next. Strength training can be utilised in conjunction with regular triathlon training to prevent you from common triathlete injuries, increase muscle capacity, and improve performance.  Following this, Jordan from Lakeside Sports Med will be offering a dedicated 6-week strength program for athletes to continue this added training component.  Details will be shared very soon!

Training updates for the next two weeks:

  • Monday - no swim due to Public Holiday
  • Tuesday – wind trainer session online 6pm for all athletes
  • Wed 14 June – swim session replaced with a strength session with Jordan!
  • Friday 16 June – swim session replaced with a strength session with Jordan!
  • Monday 19 June – swim session replaced with a strength session with Jordan!
  • Wednesday 21 June – swim session replaced with a strength session with Jordan!

And last but not least, we are wishing all our athletes heading up to Cairns the very best for fantastic race conditions and experiences.

ROAD CYCLING TIPS

Riding-Dandenongs

Bike Preparation, Nutrition, Hydration & Clothing

As we head to the hills, preparation prior to a ride is paramount.

To help avoid morning panic, it is a good habit to check your bike the night before, ensuring that your tyres are pumped and that you are equipped with working front and rear lights – which are compulsory on early morning rides.

Added to this, it is recommended that you carry a spare tube and puncture kit, a multi tool and ensure you have nutrition prepared. Ensure that you have prepared your kit, the same way in which you pack for a triathlon the night before a race.

That means, you’ve got your Tri-Alliance cycling kit and additional under layers ready.  Reminder: TA kit compulsory on all squad rides.

Along with your kit, ensure you have two drink bottles ready to go, a bar, gels or a handful of nuts. Avoid dairy or anything that may upset your stomach in the morning that will force you to have a toilet break mid-ride.

Dandenongs Winter Ride

Strength Training

It's time to start thinking about building some strength in our bodies, and one of the best ways we can do this on the bike is to head to the hills.  Riding in a low gear and grinding away works on strength and endurance.  It is also a great opportunity to get off Beach Rd and take our riding to new places.  So, to give you a heads up and help with future weekend plans, here is the cycle of rides we will be doing over the next month:

Build Week #1 - Dandenongs
Build Week #2 - Kinglake
Recovery Week - Mordialloc

All rides begin at a different location over the 3 weeks and have a starting point for long-course and short-course programs.  LC will start at 6:30am and SC at 7am.  The Recovery Week ride will be a combined group and will leave at 7am.  Make sure you check the timetable to find exact details each week of where to meet and where to ride.

ICYMI...Gaz's Thoughts

Hmmm how shall I put this?
Wind trainer last night…6 people of which 1 was long course! “Pathetic” springs to mind! The 6 who came were great and had a real crack at it and can now use it as a springboard for efficient training from here on!
If anyone says, “oh I did it on Zwift”… to me, it means you didn’t do it, and did what many of you do on a regular basis and that is, “you take the soft option”! I mean that’s why you took that option, isn’t it? Or you didn’t do it at all! And what about the people going to camp this week? I know some had a legitimate reason for not doing it, but there are more than 80 people in this group! Staggering!
The FTP is many things! It is a physical and mental test, and a test of character, and like anything, the more you do it, the better you get at it!On this test the vast majority of you failed!

winter-cycling-gear

“There’s no such thing as bad weather – just bad clothing choices.”

When you’re riding on a cold, wet and windy day, you want to be as warm and as comfortable as you can. We have a guide for those new to Winter riding, to help you avoid learning from a very cold and miserable experience of your own!

The guide talks about a lot of gear and you can wear some or (like me) often all of it at once. The key is LAYERS. Even on the coldest day, you will heat up as you grind up the hills and then become freezing cold as the wind slices through you on the descents or you hit a gully where it appears all the cold air was hiding and waiting to slap you off your bike!
