WE'RE BAAACK! Missed your weekly read?
What has taken place during the past two weeks? Hmmm.... it was something big 🤔
Was it the constant smile Greg displayed for the last week? No, that wasn't it. It was something else.... Oh that's right, KONA! Congratulations to our three champions who COMPLETED the IRONMAN World Championships!!!

JIMMY TYLER - 13:04:20
COACH "THE GENERAL" GREG - 15:46:06
DAN GORDINO - 10:14:44

We're so thrilled for all of you!  What an amazing achievement.  Let's hear a little from themselves and loved ones:
Greg - "I am “The General” or “The Zoolander”. I am bloody minded, stubborn, resilient and an annoying prick. I have been searching for my limits forever, On Thursday, when I do stand on the start line, I will most likely shed a tear. I have worked hard to get here, so I will do my best not to waste the opportunity. When the gun goes and we start racing, there will be nothing left at the table, I will give my all, it may not be the fastest race or the ideal scenario, but I will not be defeated. I will never ever give up."
Megan (for Jimmy) - "James Tyler... you are an Ironman! After dropping off the tracker with just 2km left in the marathon, he had us a little worried. Turns out a 20min bout of projectile vomiting (due to heat exhaustion) was just what was needed to get him across the line. Well done, James... I could not be more proud of you and what you accomplished today at one of the world's toughest events."
Dan - "4 years ago, @trialliance set me up for success and I’m so lucky to have the team here. @starfreckle @gregnugent01 @jimmytylerisdabomb you have made my pre-race lead in that little bit easier. Thanks guys"

TRAINING UPDATES
We finished our first build block in our Speed training phase, and we're now enjoying our first week of recovery (although if you are part of the SC Symposium you will know that Coach Gaz thinks there's more than a few who need to step up their game and earn the Recovery Week!). For our long-course athletes, your recovery weeks may look a little different than they did in the past. Although it may appear that you have fewer rest days, your training load is actually lower overall. The value of recovery weeks is unchanged from when you were in your last training phase.

Session Changes
* No coached sessions Tuesday & Thursday mornings (if you have a session on your program you will need to complete at your own discretion).
* Our most popular session of the week returns! Thursday nights are now at Elwood. Combo session for SC and Swim & Run for LC. Note this Thursday there will be no open water swim due to the predicted heavy rain fall.  It will most likely be a run only for all athletes. Take care travelling to and from Elwood.
* Saturday (LC only) - as we are fitting in some lengthy kilometres and now a run off the bike, long course rides will begin at 6am.
* NEW: Sunday swim & Runs at Elwood!

Social Corner
Shane is inviting everyone to get "Rickety Wrecked" together for some social time.
When: 15th October from 6pm.
Where: Cornerstone in Port Melbourne.
Reach out to Shane if you are interested in attending (or let Michelle know and she'll put you in contact)

Have a super week everyone 😎

Kona - The Long & Winding Road

Long, long, long post, no apologies
Back in 2002 my work colleagues Belle and Louise convinced me to have a try at the then called BRW Corporate Tri. 400m Swim, 10km Bike Ride and 4km Run. We were part of the BP team. I was overweight, unfit and had no idea what I was doing (some may say that’s still the case). Of course, we did the corporate thing, dressed in the team uniform, this ungodly Lime Green two piece that just so happened to be tight and see through when wet. I can’t recall the exact time, it was either 1:15 or 1:17, what I do recall was doing the obligatory Triathlete ritual of trawling through the photos to see myself crossing the finish line. As I said two
piece lime green see-through Lycra outfit, with this beetroot red, sweating profusely, exhausted overweight bloke collapsing over the finish line. One of my better looks.

We Need Your Data

Hi Team,

We are looking for volunteer data to help us on our crusade to improve our coaching services to you.  One of our new projects is to develop a machine-learning process that helps us develop an accurate method of prescribing your run workouts and forecasting potential race results, based on ongoing training data.

In the first instance, we can punch out all your training zones (TZ) and run times based on those zones.  As we collect more data this can be defined more accurately and you will have a more personalised experience in regards to your run training.

It will also help us develop a user-friendly add-on for our dashboard (currently under development). We urge as many of you to participate as possible.

Elwood LSC Community Shred Day

The Community Shred Day hosted by Elwood Life Saving Club is this weekend, so get out your old bank statements and tax returns. The extremely well-liked project, which has been delayed for the last two years because of Covid-19, attempts to stop criminals from obtaining personal documents like financial statements, tax returns, medical information, and expired passports. This Saturday, October 15, between 10am and 1pm, a shredder truck will be parked outside the club to trash private papers there and then. Paper waste is pulped and repurposed to make products like pizza boxes and egg cartons. Since the first Community Shred Day in 2015, more than $11,000 has been raised and about 22 tonnes of private documents have been securely destroyed.

Bendigo Community Bank Elwood is again supporting the event along with Port Phillip Council, which has provided grant funding as part of this year’s Seniors Festival. Shredding costs $5 a box with all proceeds going to the club. There is a maximum limit of five boxes a person. For further information head over to the Elwood LSC website.

SLEEP STUDY

STUDY: PROTEIN & SLEEP

My name is Jackson, and I am a PhD student at Deakin University.  I am also an accredited sports dietitian for the Western Bulldogs AFL Women and VFL men’s teams.

My research team is launching a study investigating the impact of a novel whey protein on the sleep of active (training >3 times per week) male and females that struggle to fall asleep (i.e., ≥15 minutes). As sleep difficulty can negatively impact an athlete’s mood, cognition, recovery, and sporting performance, I believe that this study investigating a practical nutrition strategy to improve sleep may be of interest to triathletes.
We have been granted approval from the University to reimburse participants with a $450 e-gift card following completion of the study.
