RECOVERY WEEK

elwood-race-4-bike-turn-around

As recovery week rolls around, so does taper week for many of our long course athletes.  We’ve had a strong contingent working hard and preparing themselves to take on Ironman Geelong 70.3 in a couple of weeks.  We wish them well on their journey to the start line!

Speaking of racing, we want to give a special shout out to Michael Falla who competed in Ironman 70.3 Dubai.  Michael is living OS, so decided to take on a local event.  His race went well, with a good swim, cracking first section of the bike, followed by a hip locking up towards the final stretch, finishing with a gutsy run to cross the line in an impressive time of 5:05.

In the tradition of recovery week, it’s time to check back in with the body once again and make sure you get on top of anything that needs massaging, stretching, sleeping, eating, chatting, planning, updating, reorganising or just generally overhauling…. now is that time.  To help you along we’ve included an article on the benefits of foam rolling.

By no doubt you’ve seen the Grand Prix making itself at home around Albert Park Lake.   Things look like they are certainly ramping up, so we’ve included the full schedule of road closures, so you can plan accordingly.

And last but not least, the weekend sessions.  It's important to note the change to Friday morning swim squad, with no lanes available at MSAC due to Junior Swim Champs, we're heading to Elwood for an open water swim! So make sure you read up and if ANYTHING is unclear….just ask!

Why, When & How To Use A Foam Roller

"In recent years, foam rolling has gone mainstream. Once a self-massage technique used only by professional athletes, coaches, and therapists; foam rolling is now an everyday practice for people at all levels of fitness. There’s a reason for the popularity of this self-massage technique: it’s simple and it works!

With the (usually foam-based) cylindrical muscle rollers now widely available in a variety of designs and firmness levels, there’s never been a better time to start. Here’s what you stand to gain if you haven’t tried foam rolling, and how to do it better if you’ve already started."

Road Closures at Albert Park Lake

ICYMI - the set up for the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix commenced in early January and as the event nears (12-15 March 2020), the number of cars, trucks and infrastructure increases in the Albert Park Lake area. This, as well as the road closures listed below, impacts a number of our training sessions and general access to the area.

We will keep you up to date each week with detailed information for particular sessions but at this stage, the main focus is for those who attend Thursday morning hot laps. Please take extra care at this session the road set up may have changed since the week prior or there may be additional obstacles in the way, there can be water on the road due to extra watering (they have to make Melbourne look good with nice green grass...of course!) and there may be temporary stops or navigation required around vehicles entering, exiting and stopping on the road.

We have also included the road closure information below, please be mindful that the road has already commenced closures from 7am when choosing where to park before a session!

ROAD CLOSURES - LAKESIDE DRIVE RESTRICTED ACCESS:

10 February – 5 March 2020

20 March – 27 March 2020

During the above periods Lakeside Drive will be closed to public traffic between:

9.30am – 3.30pm each week day; and

7.00pm Friday to 7.00am Monday each weekend.

LAKESIDE DRIVE CLOSED:

9:30am Friday 6 March – 3:30pm Thursday 19 March 2020

ALBERT PARK PRECINCT ALL ROADS CLOSED:

Sunday 8 March – Monday 16 March 2020

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY

Deakin-Uni-Study
Calling Endurance Cyclists

Deakin University is currently running a research project, testing male endurance cyclists with a suite of physical performance markers to identify their trends with performance changes. These markers are at the forefront of performance management in sport research and are thought to help identify an individual’s physiological state and performance capacity.

They are currently looking for participants.  All participants will receive a free Vo2 Max assessment including determination of power at Vo2 Max and anaerobic threshold which can be highly useful for exercise programming.

Additionally, participants will be regularly monitored by physiological markers that are usually limited to elite athlete and research programs. This will give you firsthand experience on how to manage yourself to maximize performance and training adaptions using these physiological markers going forward.
Please see attached a flyer that provides some information about the study.  If anyone is interested or has any questions, please don’t hesitate to email: [email protected].
