Spikes, Reflections & Racing Colours

Queenscliff Soaking

Buckle up superstars, because we're right in the heart of it—Build Week #2, the pulsing core of our 3-week periodisation cycle. This is where the magic truly unfolds, where you tap into that inner reservoir of strength and resilience. Whether you're lacing up those running shoes or strapping into the saddle this week, get ready to push through and earn your recovery.

Now, let's spill the beans about our Queenscliff Pre-Season Camp. Holy guacamole, what a weekend! The dedication and achievements of our camp attendees were so impressive. They weren't just breaking personal records; they were rewriting the rulebook at times. And guess what? Even the weather decided to play along (well, kind of)! We've got all the feels in camp reflections waiting for you below.  And no doubt you're about to see some special goodies they received on camp #fancy

But wait, there's more! Brace yourselves for a treat—a Camp Reflection by none other than Captain Gaz himself. Yes, that's right, the guy who's usually as grumpy as a cat with a thorn in its paw. Well, he surprised us all by pouring everything into the camp sessions and earning his nap on the couch.  His reflection below highlights the respect for the camp warriors who worked alongside him.

Folks, consider this a heartfelt appeal: our tri suit pre-orders are closing their doors at 5 pm tomorrow, and we're urging you to make the commitment.  Racing in our squad colours isn't merely about making a statement; it's a declaration of our unity, strength, and shared passion. When you slip into the yellow and blue, you're not just representing a team; you're representing a family of like-minded, determined individuals. We wear those colours with an extreme sense of pride, and we're bursting at the thought of you proudly donning them too! Let's paint the town (and the course) with the TA spirit!

In case you didn’t know, Spring is here!  And with it comes a brand-new training phase—the Speed and Endurance Phase. This is where the real magic happens. It's the sweet spot where strength meets speed, and endurance takes centre stage. With less than three months until race day, read on to see what makes this phase so crucial.

And speaking of change, so too do our weekend rides.  Keeping in line with the speed phase, all Saturday rides will now kick off from Elwood at 6:30am. Time trial bikes welcomed!  We're heading south, with distances tailored to your programs and coach's expert guidance. If you're jumping on your TT bike for the first time or trying out those racing bars, consider hanging towards the back. Safety first, team!

A big round of applause to everyone who braved less-than-ideal riding conditions at Amy's Grand Fondo over the weekend.  Tough days make the reward even sweeter!

And let's not forget to shower Aurelie and Enrique with the best racing vibes as they take on the marathon challenge up in Sydney this weekend. We know they've been working hard together on their goal and wish them every success.

As winter waves goodbye and the sun starts taking the spotlight, it means there is not long left until we transition to the Summer timetable.  This happens in sync with daylight savings. So, until then, we encourage you to make the absolute most of the remaining sessions on our Winter timetable.

Remember, we're your ultimate support crew, rain, hail or shine. Reach out if you need advice, motivation, or just a friendly chat.

Where Limits Are Meant to Be Broken

Our pre-season camp over the weekend was an absolute blast.  First off, let me say that we are beyond impressed with the dedication and achievements of our camp attendees. They not only pushed their limits but also racked up more accomplishments than they ever thought possible in just a weekend. It's like they discovered a secret well of energy and determination!

For those who couldn't make it, we wanted to give you a taste of the magic that unfolded.  These reflections capture the euphoria and pride that come from tackling physical challenges head-on.

"During my two and a half day training camp, I saw personal growth and was motivated by my progress and the advice from the coaches. Despite moments of self-doubt and comparing myself to others, I recognised my own strength and resilience. The support from all the coaches and the shared dedication of the Tri-Alliance athletes truly stood out. By the end of the camp, I was eager to push myself even further, underscoring the transformative impact the camp had on my approach to training. I didn’t want it to end!!!"

“Do you want to know your limits, come to Queenscliff where you will experience having your legs turn to jelly and push beyond what you thought possible.  When you think you are there. . . Keep going"

"I have just one comment - If you didn’t get a half eaten donut passed to you from the Tri-Alliance van while riding back from the swim, you missed out. I even have proof of the jam that dropped onto my bento box."

"I guess one of the beauties of a camp, is that it can give you a good snapshot of where your boundaries currently are (which may/not meet expectations) so you can assess your work by looking back as well as into the future. A race is another chance to do this, but probably better to calibrate your training before and not after you've crossed the finish line."

"The most profound lesson was realising the mind's extraordinary power, which often surpasses physical requirements. I wholeheartedly recommend the TA camp for anyone seeking personal growth and development through challenges that shape both body and mind."

Camp Thoughts From Captain Gaz

"Where do I start? Camps….

Why do we do them when they are so hard? Ask anyone who was at Queenscliff over the weekend and they’ll say the same thing! “Yeah it was hard, really hard, but I loved it”!

Everyone there pushed themselves to, and past their limit! Everyone there learnt things! They did stuff they haven’t done before, with coaches there to keep them on track and point the way!

One of the great skills you can learn and also probably the most difficult, is how to push yourself and get the best out of yourself! The intensity of the camp and effort you have to put in, to back up session after session is a great way to begin this learning process! You can’t help but test your limits following an itinerary that is designed to take you further than where you’ve been before!

But there’s another side to this, and that is the Group spirit and camaraderie that develops at a camp that lifts you to greater efforts than what you think you are actually capable of!

The sense of achievement and satisfaction when you “get it done” is exhilarating!

Again, ask those that were there! They’ll all be physically shattered (especially me) but they’ll all proud and happy to have been part of the experience!

You should try it!"

EMBRACE THE NEW PHASE

Spring Strength and Speed

Welcome to the Speed and Endurance Phase of our training program, the third stage in our journey towards getting you to peak performance for the upcoming triathlon season! As we transition into spring, the excitement builds, with less than three months left until race day. This phase combines the best of both worlds—strength, endurance, and a newfound focus on speed and threshold training. Let's take a look at what makes this phase so crucial:

Threshold Training for Short Course Athletes

For our short course athletes, September is all about pushing your limits and honing in on threshold training. This means finding that sweet spot where your effort level is high but sustainable. Threshold sessions will help you maintain a faster pace for longer, a key factor in short course racing success.

Endurance Meets Threshold for Long Course Athletes

Long course athletes, your training during this phase is a blend of endurance and threshold work. It's all about extending your staying power while maintaining your speed at that crucial threshold level. This combination is vital for conquering the longer distances and varied terrain of your upcoming races.

Beginners' Focus on Fundamentals

For those of you just beginning your triathlon journey this season, September is about building a strong foundation. Your focus should be on triathlon-specific sessions that include base fitness, refining technique, and mastering essential triathlon skills. These early steps will set you on the path to success in the months to come.

Why the Speed and Endurance Phase Matters

1. Race-Specific Prep: The blend of speed, threshold, and endurance training replicates race conditions, ensuring you're well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

2. Efficiency is Key: As you push your limits, maintaining efficiency in your technique becomes even more critical. Our focus on this phase is not just on speed but on being fast with precision.

3. Mental Toughness: These sessions will also test your mental resilience. Pushing your boundaries requires a strong mind as well as a strong body.

4. Balanced Progression: We're building upon the foundation of strength and endurance established in the previous phase. This balanced progression is essential for your overall success.

Embrace the Speed and Endurance Phase

Here are some tips to help you make the most of this phase and gear up for the triathlon season:

  • Training Plan Adherence: Stick to your training plan consistently. The cumulative effect of these workouts is where your progress truly shines.
  • Nutrition: Continue to fuel your body with the right nutrients. Pay attention to your intake of carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats, and essential nutrients to match your training demands.
  • Rest and Recovery: Adequate sleep, hydration, and recovery techniques remain paramount. Listen to your body and give it the care it deserves.
  • Consult with Your Coach: Keep the lines of communication open with your coach. They will help tailor your training plan to your individual needs and track your progress.
  • Stay Inspired: Visualise your goals, celebrate your achievements along the way, and stay motivated. Remember, every session brings you one step closer to your triathlon dreams.

This Speed and Endurance Phase is a pivotal stage in your journey. It's where you'll refine your abilities and set the stage for a successful performance when race day arrives. Keep pushing your boundaries, stay focused, and the triathlon season will be yours for the taking!
