🌸 Happy Mother’s Day to the Real MVPs

Before we get into training, sessions, triathlon chaos and swim lane politics… we need to start with something far more important.

Yesterday was Mother’s Day.

And honestly… where would any of us be without our mums?

Whether they’re:

  • our coaches

  • our athletes

  • our biggest supporters

  • our race-day cheer squads

  • our chauffeurs

  • our snack providers

  • our emotional support crew

  • or somehow still willing to wash triathlon gear that smells like a damp wetsuit and regret…

…the mums of Tri-Alliance deserve a massive shoutout.

Triathlon isn’t an easy sport to support.  It involves: very early alarms, endless weekends, expensive equipment, weird tan lines, carb-loading conversations no one asked for, and people voluntarily exercising for six hours straight.

Yet somehow mums continue to support us, encourage us, feed us, and stand around in freezing conditions clapping like we’ve just won Kona when really we’ve only managed to locate our bike in transition.

To all the mums in our community...thank you.

Whether you’re racing yourself, supporting your family, juggling training around kids, or simply helping make this community what it is… we appreciate you more than you know.

💛 Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at TA.

🔄 Technique & Base: Week One Done… and It Feels Good

Well team… we’re officially back into it.

One week into Technique & Base Training and the vibe around the squad already feels completely different.

The energy is back.
The routine is returning.
The alarms are being set again.
The Garmin uploads are increasing.
And perhaps most importantly… the swim squad banter has returned in full force.

Recovery Month absolutely served its purpose.  People freshened up.  Bodies got a break.  Minds got a reset.  Athletes spent time with family, travelled, caught up on life admin, rediscovered sleep and maybe even remembered what weekends felt like without racing.

But now?

👉 It’s time to build again.

And honestly, there’s something really satisfying about being back in a structured rhythm.

The first week back at MSAC has been a huge success.
The pool sessions have been buzzing.
Lanes are full.
People are reconnecting.
And while there may have been a few “wow I forgot how hard swimming is” moments… everyone seems genuinely excited to be back.

That’s what this phase is all about.  Not smashing yourself into the ground.  Not chasing peak fitness in May.

👉 Rebuilding properly.

Technique.  Consistency.  Control.  Durability.

The athletes who respect this phase now will thank themselves later in the season.

🎟️ The 10 Session Pass Is BACK

And speaking of flexibility…

👉 The TA 10 Session Pass is officially BACK.

This has been requested by quite a few people over the past 12 months, and honestly, we get it.

Life is busy.

Some athletes travel for work, work shift schedules, juggle kids sport, manage family commitments, can only consistently make one session a week, or simply need a little more flexibility around their training.

That’s exactly why we brought this option back.

We still want people connected to the squad.  We still want people training with the community. And we still want people to have access to coaching and sessions,  even if weekly memberships don’t quite suit their current lifestyle.

Here’s how it works:

✅ $250 for 10 sessions
✅ Can be used at ANY squad sessions
✅ Requires an active Annual Membership
✅ Valid for 8 weeks from activation

The expiry period is something we’ve had to introduce from a business point of view, but the overall goal remains the same:

👉 flexibility without disconnecting from the squad.

So if you’ve been sitting on the fence because life feels a little chaotic right now… this could be the perfect option.

You’ll find it under the Memberships tab.

📅 Your Weekly Blueprint

The timetable is now live online, and every single session has been placed exactly where it needs to be.

* Every session has a purpose.
* Every session complements the others.
* And the structure matters.

Monday — Technique & Base Swim

The week starts with technical focus and aerobic reset.
After weekends that may include long rides, runs or racing, Monday swimming allows athletes to move, reconnect with the water, and focus on skill before intensity ramps through the week.

Tuesday — Windtrainer @ MSAC

Controlled indoor riding allows for highly specific work.
No traffic.
No interruptions.
No coasting downhill pretending you’re “recovering.”

This session builds aerobic strength, pedalling efficiency and controlled power output.
It’s one of the best bang-for-buck sessions we run.

Wednesday — Technique Swim

Midweek swim sessions reinforce technical habits while continuing to build aerobic conditioning.
Swimming well is about repetition of good movement patterns.
This session keeps building those foundations.

Thursday — Run @ The Tan

Simple.
Repeatable.
Effective.

The Tan allows athletes to learn pacing, effort control and consistency.
Whether you’re running easy aerobic work or threshold efforts, the environment provides measurable feedback week after week.

Friday — Day Off

Yes… this is deliberate too.

Recovery is training.
Adaptation happens here.
And one of the biggest mistakes athletes make is underestimating how important rest is.

Saturday — Beach Rd Ride

This is where aerobic durability starts getting built.
Time in the saddle.
Pack riding skills.
Cadence control.
Nutrition practice.
Bike handling.
Group dynamics.

There’s a reason Beach Rd has built generations of strong endurance athletes.

Sunday — Fairfield Long Run

Durability.
Patience.
Aerobic conditioning.
Mental resilience.

Long runs aren’t always flashy.
But they’re one of the biggest pillars of endurance development.

👉 Together, this timetable builds complete athletes.
Not just tired ones.

Trust the process.

😂 The 7 Personalities You’ll Meet in a Swim Lane

Now that we’re a few sessions back into pool life… the ecosystem has officially returned.

The lanes are alive again.  The chaos is building.  And the personalities?  Oh, they’re all back.

Every swim squad in the world has them. Ours is no different.

You may recognise a few teammates in this list…
You may recognise yourself.

👣 1. The Toe-Tapper

Leaves exactly 1.4 seconds behind you… then spends the entire rep touching your feet like a needy Labrador.

Usually convinced you’re the problem.

Hidden talent: creating panic in everyone ahead of them.

🗣️ 2. The Wall Talker

Treats every recovery like an extended coffee catch-up.

You’re trying to leave on the red top. They’re halfway through a story about their weekend in Sorrento.

Meanwhile, 7 swimmers are stacked behind them waiting to push off.

🐍 3. The Lane Snake

Technically circle swimming.
Emotionally? Absolute chaos.

Cannot hold a straight line under any circumstances.  Drifts across the lane like they’re navigating open water in a crosswind.

🚀 4. The Olympian Starter

Every single push-off is treated like an Olympic Final.

Explosive dive.
Massive dolphin kick.
Water everywhere.

Usually fades dramatically by the 75m mark.

🎒 5. The Equipment Collector

Turns up carrying:

  • fins

  • paddles

  • pull buoy

  • snorkel

  • tempo trainer

  • resistance band

  • mesh bag the size of a small caravan

At this point we’re not sure if they’re training or relocating interstate.

😶 6. The Silent Assassin

Never talks.
Never complains.
Never looks tired.

Just quietly swims 5 seconds faster per 100 than everyone else while maintaining perfect technique.

Terrifying humans.

😇 7. The “Recovery Pace” Swimmer

Claims they’re “taking it easy today.”

Then proceeds to absolutely bury the lane during aerobic efforts.

We see you.
We do not trust you.

🚴‍♂️ The Future of Fair Racing👀

There’s been a lot of chatter this week after RaceRanger announced plans to roll anti-drafting technology into full age-group racing fields from 2027...and honestly, it could be one of the biggest shifts our sport has seen in years.

For those unfamiliar, RaceRanger is the technology already being used in professional racing that gives athletes and referees real-time feedback on drafting distances out on course.

In simple terms:
👉 if you’re too close for too long… everyone knows about it.

And that’s where things get interesting.

For years, drafting in long-course racing has been one of triathlon’s biggest frustrations.
Some athletes work incredibly hard to ride honest, legal races, while others roll the dice sitting just a little too close, hoping referees don’t spot it.

The reality is that officiating thousands of athletes spread across a 90km or 180km course has never been easy.

But technology is changing that.

What’s fascinating isn’t just the policing side of things, it’s how this could completely change the way people race.

If drafting becomes harder to get away with, suddenly:

  • bike strength matters more

  • pacing discipline matters more

  • aerodynamics matter more

  • and the ability to ride strong solo efforts becomes incredibly important.

There’s nowhere to hide in the draft pack anymore.

And honestly? That’s probably a good thing for the sport.

At the same time, RaceRanger’s CEO addressed growing speculation around whether athletes would try to “game the system,” with the technology specifically designed to make that extremely difficult.

Like all new tech, there’ll no doubt be debate around:

  • cost

  • implementation

  • and how it works in massive race fields

…but the direction triathlon is heading feels pretty clear.

More accountability.
More transparency.
More emphasis on truly racing your own race.

Which brings us back to something we talk about a lot at TA:

The Mirror Test.

Because while technology can help enforce fairness, it still comes down to the athlete.

Racing with integrity isn’t about avoiding penalties. It’s about knowing you earned your result honestly.

And if this technology becomes widespread over the next few years, the athletes who consistently:

  • train strong

  • ride legally

  • and focus on themselves instead of everyone around them

…will be the ones who benefit most.

Interesting times ahead for triathlon.

💛 Final Thoughts

And just like that… winter training is properly underway.

The pool is buzzing.
The squad is reconnecting.
The structure is back.
And the foundations for next season are already being built.

This phase isn’t about being heroic.
It’s about being consistent.

Showing up.
Doing the work.
Learning the process.
Trusting the bigger picture.

The athletes who embrace this time of year are almost always the ones smiling later in the season.

So settle in.
Enjoy the routine.
Enjoy the people.
Enjoy the process.

And maybe try not to be the Toe-Tapper this week.

💙💛
