Give me an R....R!  Give me an E...E!  Give me a C.O.V.E.R.Y......OK, you get it!  Can you tell we're excited to have reached the golden R-Week?!?  For those who have been building consistently, this comes as a welcomed relief and will give the body some time to recuperate and turn all that hard work into gains.  Just remember to enjoy those sleep ins, eat that nutritious food and treat each session with the purpose it was designed for - follow the intensities prescribed.  We've also included an article this week to help release tight hips from training and the workplace, to help get you back in good shape for the next build weeks.

This week is also a good time to check back in with your technique, to ensure you haven't slipped back into old habits and are keeping going with new movement patterns you may be creating.  Think 'perfect form' as opposed to 'going fast' or 'keeping up'!  There is a strong emphasis on this in the pool at the moment.  Coaches are focusing heavily on your technique, not your lane position.  So don't get caught up with rushing the drills, skimping on your stroke of relying on the toys to keep you on toes.  That is not the purpose of these sessions now.  Listen to your coaches and take time to implement what they are saying.  We have a wealth of knowledge on our pool deck, so use them!  Couple of quick reminders from the Coaches about swim session priorities: 1/ tumble turns are a must (now is the perfect time to be practising these), 2/ you must bring snorkels and bands (cut up an old bike tube into thirds for a perfect fit) to each session, 3/ make sure you are doing your band work (link below for how to purchase a set) and 4/ if you don't understand a drill - just ask!  Do it right from the start and build good habits.   

You should have noticed that we are offering a Strength & Conditioning session this Wednesday night at the neAthletic Performance Centre in MSAC.  This will focus on functional exercises designed to help your triathlon performance (not a body sculpting session!).  We are running these for free each Wednesday night for the next 4 weeks, and will gauge interest and finalize potential costs over this time.  There are limited spots, so we are asking athletes to book into these sessions.  The booking link will be sent out at 6pm each Sunday night for the upcoming session.  We hope this provides everyone with an opportunity to come along.   

Our Weekend Wrap Up this week includes a great race report from Coach Scotty on his recent road racing adventures and our junior rocket enjoying some time on a training holiday!

Strength training should be an integral part of any comprehensive endurance sports plan and we've developed proven programs, to have you in the best shape possible to kick your goals.  We'll be running Triathlon Specific strength and conditioning session across the month of July, and will gauge interest going forward.  Get in quick...These sessions are limited to 20 people, so bookings are essential.  We will be opening bookings each Sunday night at 6pm.

5 Moves to Relieve Tight Hips

"The demands of training paired with time at a desk can leave many of us with tight hips. Tight hips manifest in many ways, from back and knee pain to decreased power and performance in your chosen discipline. These exercises will help increase strength and mobility in your hips, helping negate those desk-hours and relieving any tightness or pain.

Get Me Some Bands

There's now escaping the wonderful world of BANDS, and we're seeing more and more athletes completing their exercises after each swim set.  Resistance bands are simply a tool that help you replicate any functional movement, while applying a strength enhancing, muscle building resistance. As a result resistance band training will make movements and muscles stronger while simultaneously improving movement coordination.
But...now you need to know where to get your hands on them.  The regular supplier we have been using seems to be out of stock.  You can check them out here: EBAY Supplier or alternatively we've found another supplier offering a deal for 2 sets (highly recommended as 1 set is only 1 length and you need double to do both arms at the same time).  It doesn't matter where you get your bands from - just make sure they have different tensions (colours) and preferably come with handles.  Shop around!

New Start Times
It might only be a small change, but those early morning minutes are precious!  For the month of July, MOST morning sessions will start at 6am.
Tuesday runs, Wednesday swims and Thursday Hot Laps = 6am - either from MSAC front entrance or in the water.  Friday enduro swims will still be at 5:45am to allow time to complete the set.

CORE uses information about the athlete the activity and the goals to define personalized targets.  It then uses athlete input about preferred fuels and course nutrition availability to build a custom nutrition plan that best achieves those targets.  In this video, all things sports nutiriton are discussed with Professor Asker Jeukendrup, including what to eat while training and how to fuel for races.  Can you fuel naturally?  What considerations do you need to keep in mind?  Can your muscles tell the difference between where you get your carbohydrate calories from...Fast Food or Free Range???
